The Wyandotte Thread

Quote:
I have seen 1 pair of Birchen LF and I have yet to see the Bantam. I am rather interested in the Bantam Wyandotte as I have some very special ones coming this fall. I have had a few varieties of bantam before and honestly enjoy them more than the LF.

I am quite patient and never in a hurry for a bird, I always figure the first 3 years with a new line or variety is teh learning curve with that line so anytime.

In the event you have some in the next two years that would be fine.

ok sounds good. i just checked out your website and tried to view some of your blr stock, but couldnt get any pics to come up...am i doing something wrong?

Nope not you we need to update some pics in there and rebuilt the most of site and had not finished yet, We had some Bantam BLR as well that were great in type not too bad in color however were horrible breeders. We recently let all of our bantams blue and black go to a family looking to get a start in 4-H poultry club, I have been making room for another variety thi sfall.

So why to you prefere the bantam? We have been trying to figure out the reasons for having bantam birds. Is it mainly as a pet, like a dog, but with a small egg? Part of our concern with the bantam breeds is the higher incedence of predators, getting a meal.

haha too funny....Robert's gonna need to play catch up eh? haha

The birchen line my dad has is bantam, but I do have a large fowl wyandotte that is starting to exhibit defnite birchen...so if I play my cards right I will have birchens in large fowl and bantam. I have 4 partridge growing out right now...they are roughly 5 months I think...and I admit...I really like them....but then again I love lacing of any kind....single lacing, double lacing, the laced collar of the birchens and etc....love love love

About your other question...why bantam over large fowl....mostly it is a personal preference. When you have a dual purpose breed like the wyandottes...even in bantam they still make a good dress out bird if you choose to use them for eggs and meat. Bantam wyandottes still lay a decent size egg, so if that is a plus too. As far as predators...I keep my bantams in a large chicken house and when they go to graze they are in pens I move around. I do that because I do worry about them getting snagged by hawks. I know I still run that risk with the large fowl, but my large fowl birds are very very quick about heeding my boys warning calls. I'm getting into a building project for a set of larger breeder pens where I will feel much more secure about my birds because they are too valuable to me to risk them.

ok... I liked what I saw for your website thus far. I'm working on building one myself and it can get kind of overwhelming for me...so I work in bits and pieces...it makes my life much easier. I hope to get it up and running sooner than later tho. I finally came up with a name...so that is a hurdle and a half done

Hello! New to this thread. I have 3 dotte hens/pullets (?) named Venna, Vanna, and Vonna. 1 Silver and 2 gold. They are only 3 months old right now but such adorable little girls.

I also have 16 other chickens as well. My yard looks like it has parasites when they are all in front! I love it!

Some interesting news from my wyandottes. Momma kept the white wyandottes when I moved away. She still has a pair of the originals, they are going on 6 years old now. The hen lost a couple toes to frost bite last winter and the rooster hasnt produced a fertile egg since he was 2. This summer they free ranged with all the layer hens and the hen vanished. I found her when I was mowing over in the corner of the pen setting. I forgot to take the eggs away from her and went to check on her today and saw an egg was crushed behind her. It still had the inner shell membrane but the outer shell was crushed and gone. I peeled it open and found a chick inside, bright yellow with a rose comb and orange legs about 17 days along. I havent candled her other eggs yet, gonna leave her another week or so just to see. But the bright side here is that since the white wyandotte bantam rooster was the only male out all summer it means he isnt sterile. If the hen doesnt hatch out any chicks I think I will try to set some of her eggs this coming year.

Also I have a new breeding project in mind that I need silver pencilled wyandotte bantam hens for, anyone know any good breeders that would sell eggs in the spring?

Wow thanks for the info. I dont plan on eating these birds, but good to know the bantam could be used. I would never have thought they would be much of any size for that purpose. I also would not have thought they would be much size to the eggs. I was so hesitant to ask, as I didnt want it taken wrong.

NovaAman, pretty birds.
