The Wyandotte Thread

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to post that I have listed a 24 hour auction for a variety pack of our Wyandotte eggs.

We have people ask for these, I don't normally sell eggs, in fact I've never sold any of our eggs so this is the first time. We have in the auction Large Fowl SLW,BLR & Bantam SLW,Black,White. We show all over & have won numerous championships with these birds, and the eggs are from our best stock. So if you've ever wanted any eggs from us, here is your chance. Thanks

Thanks for the info! I guess we're more into the eggs...I love the colors and temperment, but mine have to produce to stick around!

We don't produce them strictly for show. it is more to preserve the breed as it was intended to be, dual purpose with a long productive life. I have birds at 5 yrs of age that stil lay 5 days a week and in the winter, I do not belive that can be said for hatchery stock. They are also larger and fuller in body making them more paletable as table fair than any hachery stock I have seen lately. We all have our color culls and they serve a purpose for the avearge person just not my breed pen.

Anymore I figure to each thier own there is a bird for everyone. Some prefer a slightly younger maturing bird that has a shorter productive life and some like a larger slightly slower maturing bird that needs rotated out of the laying pen less frequently. Breeder culls in the long run are less costly than hatchery stock every year, and truely help sustain the breed as it was intended to be.

thats good to know! I'd like to have the girls around longer and have them be more productive, but I don't know where my birds came from, I'm guessing they are hatchery birds. I am not looking forward to replacing chickens every few years. our hens are laying pretty well right now, but they just started, and on this farm if they don't hold their own they have to go!

There is a good of reading I have had for quite some time that would very helpfull to many who are working on lacing quality problems, color quality issues, as well as size type and other items directly related to the Wyandotte breed.
It only covers Silver Laced, Golden Laced, Black and White however many of the items are great reference and can be carried to other wyandotte varieties and even breeds that carry similar patterns.

this is a good read and great reference 120 pages.

I know this question has come up a time or two on this thread, so I thought I'd post a couple of pictures.

My very first birds were hatchery quality (feed store) SLW and I love those girls best of all and they really sold me on the breed.

But after getting some from Paul's Poultry, the difference between hatchery and breeder quality birds is SO obvious. These are only five months old.

Not quite sure what my little guy is doing, stretching his neck out like that, but you get the idea.

I wouldn't give up my two original girls for the world but they just are not the eye candy my breeder birds are.

Thanks to all of you out there that work so hard to make this breed so beautiful.
