So, it's been quite a while since I posted that in this thread but frankly, after the response I got, I decided that perhaps I should just stick to the shadows. However, since I -did- post it, I decided that a follow-up was in order.

I contacted the APA soon after the fair and asked questions regarding Wyandotte Breeders. I got the names of several that might be willing to answer my questions and that would be patient enough to deal with a 'newbie'. After a few weeks of working my way through the list and talking to individual breeders, I found a wonderful women in my neck of the woods that has some fantastic Wyandotte stock from a well-known breeder down south...(name escapes me for the moment). She's been great with information and in a few weeks, we will be going to pick up a wonderful rooster from her to breed with our Wyandotte.

Like everyone else, she was astonished that we got such a great bird from a hatchery but she said that it happens once in a blue moon. Apparently it's equivalent to winning the lottery so we aren't taking it for granted. =-) I've included a few pictures of Alex. A few things to note.....she's still young (5 months when those pics were taken) so she's still growing into her body....and there's a bit of smuttiness on her tail due to her walking underneath one of my dad's old vehicles that was leaking a tiny bit of oil. Ugh...a pain to get out, I swear.

I understand people were skeptical about Alex and I understand but that whole scenario back then just put a bad taste in my mouth. I come to this board to ask questions and get advice from people that have been doing this a whole lot longer then I have. I don't do things just because. I do the research and ask the questions. A total of three people (1 APA judge and 2 APA breeders have told me that her traits are good enough to be bred) and so I consider that good enough for me.

Anyways, I thought people would want to see pics of her so I've included them. I'll post pics of the rooster as soon as he gets here and gets settled in.

Did you ever find a rooster? I have five cockerels and four of them are looking pretty good. I'll only keep two. I have no idea how one would ship an adult bird, but if you plan to be down in California, you can have one of my extras.

I am sorry that happened to you, everyone must have been on vacation or preoccupied....the wyandotte thread is normally a very helpful bunch.

I am not sure who you are getting your rooster from but Christine Cole in Oregon has very nice SLW, you can pm me and I can send you her contact information.

Thanks! She is actually who I am getting a rooster from. =-) We will be meeting up with her on the 14th of October. I'm pretty excited about it! She gave me a rather detailed and wonderful review of our SLW and was really blown away that she was a hatchery bird. She's been watching her boys for a while now and waiting to see which one would compliment Alex. I had to giggle at the first pictures of the rooster because his siblings had torn off all his feathers on his backside! He wasn't looking very roo-ish.

Christine also offered to talk to me about how to prepare for shows and such. It's really hard to get -good- information on show prep out of the local 4-H. Good show prep for them is washing the bird in baby shampoo....and I know that there are a lot of things to show prep. What can I say....I'm a perfectionist. =-)

Thanks for the posts!

P.S. If anyone has any ideas about what to do with the males from the breeding, let me know. I don't have the heart to process them and would rather they go to homes that will enjoy them but I'm not sure whether to post an ad or what would be the best option. They are going to be rather nice boys most likely.

I have five, and will only keep one or two. One's not very good quality - I'll eat him. But I'm going to check with the other parents in our 4H group to see if they want any of the others first, and maybe here too. But they're nice and big, so it won't be too hard to eat them. But that's what I do with roosters, so I'm used to it.
