OMG where is your Dun laced from I want soo bad lol. SO I popped into my local thread, but I figured I'd ask on here. How are you LF wyandottes egg size. My hatchery girl, while her egg isn't big its far more decent than that of my breeder girls. Also my overall size of my breeder girls is considerably smaller.

I was just discussing this with a friend of mine. Our girls from 3 different breeder lines all lay a small egg. It is a big disappointment. I wonder why this is and how to improve egg size?

I have a Paul line hen that is small, but my Foley, and Blue Poultry girls are a nice size and are throwing babies with good size paired up with my Greg Catt line rooster.

My Pauls line are tiny....I'll post a pic in a second, I also have a hatchery columbian wyandotte, who is 2....never laid an egg she squats, she sings, she sits in the box bless her heart, no eggs...EVER. But both she and my SLW who I got together and my wellie who is from hatchery as well good sized birds...the wellie lays the biggest egg of the 3. My BIGGEST egg layer is my almost one year old barred rock she lays HUGE and every day.

I have one Silver Laced Wyandotte that absolutely loves to take her dirt baths out in the yard. So funny that she will roll and flick dirt and dig her hole, while the other hens are only interested in searching for food.

Dirt baths better than food?

It is for my Wyandotte.

So, it's been quite a while since I posted that in this thread but frankly, after the response I got, I decided that perhaps I should just stick to the shadows. However, since I -did- post it, I decided that a follow-up was in order.

I contacted the APA soon after the fair and asked questions regarding Wyandotte Breeders. I got the names of several that might be willing to answer my questions and that would be patient enough to deal with a 'newbie'. After a few weeks of working my way through the list and talking to individual breeders, I found a wonderful women in my neck of the woods that has some fantastic Wyandotte stock from a well-known breeder down south...(name escapes me for the moment). She's been great with information and in a few weeks, we will be going to pick up a wonderful rooster from her to breed with our Wyandotte.

Like everyone else, she was astonished that we got such a great bird from a hatchery but she said that it happens once in a blue moon. Apparently it's equivalent to winning the lottery so we aren't taking it for granted. =-) I've included a few pictures of Alex. A few things to note.....she's still young (5 months when those pics were taken) so she's still growing into her body....and there's a bit of smuttiness on her tail due to her walking underneath one of my dad's old vehicles that was leaking a tiny bit of oil. Ugh...a pain to get out, I swear.

I understand people were skeptical about Alex and I understand but that whole scenario back then just put a bad taste in my mouth. I come to this board to ask questions and get advice from people that have been doing this a whole lot longer then I have. I don't do things just because. I do the research and ask the questions. A total of three people (1 APA judge and 2 APA breeders have told me that her traits are good enough to be bred) and so I consider that good enough for me.

Anyways, I thought people would want to see pics of her so I've included them. I'll post pics of the rooster as soon as he gets here and gets settled in.

Heavens, she is a beautiful bird. I'm new to the list or I would have commented earlier. I have two Wyandottes, still babies, but they're just the loveliest birds. Congratulations on winning the lottery!

Wanted to share the two latest additions to our flock. Bantam Silver Laced Wyandottes hatched on Monday to my bantam Mille Fleur Cochin. These were shipped eggs so should be happy with two hatcing, but I so wanted a few more than that! Here's hoping at least one is a pullet!

Are they pullets or full grown hens 18 months old? Pullets can lay a pretty small eggs, but normally wyandottes dont lay a real big egg...I have been working on egg size on my BLRW for several years now..
