The Wyandotte Thread

Trimmed my SLW roo from Foley today.... that was a lot of fluff :gig I could tell he felt a little ashamed when we put him back with his girl :lau   I will give them a couple of days and then set some more eggs and see if that helps.  Next step AI  :p   My hubby wants no part of that

Hope I haven't missed something and asking you to repeat it, but what's the trimming about? Are you AI-ing because he's not fertilizing the egg?

I think she trimmed his feathers to help him make "contact" while mating. If that doesn't work she is considering AI.

My roo I got from Foley has never given me fertilized eggs. I trimmed some fluff (about 3 hands full) and we are going to see if that helps if not.... AI

Thanks. This was sorta my guess, but since I have birds from the same breeder I'm especially interested. Do you think you might get a quicker answer if you had him fertility tested?

I think it could be that they are just so big that making contact is harder. There are some turkeys that have to be AI'ed because they can't mate normally because of their size...

Remember the eggs I ordered from another breeder, half were not fertile...

I hope that trimming down the feathers works, but I would wait at east a week before checking the eggs. Does he have a good sex drive?

Quote: I have seen him TRY.... Foley told me he had NEVER seen a SLW roo mount a hen..... he said they were funny that way. My younger trio, I have seen the roo mount the pullet several times. I have thought about taking him out and making him want it more......

If it works it would work right off, with in 24 hours. I will collect this week and see. As much as I paid for the pair, I hope I can get some chicks.

Not sure a chicken is worth that....  Fertility in SLW is relatively low that is common.  I may have to run 2 roos with the hens down the road, just to make sure. He told me no more than 3 hens per roo, but this roo just has one hen.

Okay, didn't know any of that. Apparently mine didn't come with instructions. Are you aware of any problems with the female fertility?
