The Wyandotte Thread

I have a cockerel blr chick who is the "black" variety. He looks like a gl except he's mahogany. I was trying to better the coloring of the gl, but if the blue will bleed through that crossing he'll be making a trip to the next swap meet instead. Thanks for the reply

Here are a few from my 2nd Line. They tend to be larger, have better red, but occasionally need work on the body shape.

McSpin, very nice birds. I have two lines also and know what you are talking about with the larger line. Mine also tend to be larger and tend to need work on body type. The larger line also has a very rich mahogany. Here's a pic of my larger line.

This is a pic of my blr line that tend to be a bit smaller.

Thanks Cedar Post, yours look very similar. I think the attempt to get more mahogany into them was from a non-wyandotte, which is causing some birds to be too long in the back and not as broad as we'd like. Nice birds just the same, and it will be fun seeing how future generations improve. I culled a lot of cockerels to get down to 3 that I like.

I didn't make any outcrosses, but suspect that others used that or maybe Buckeyes to introduce the color into the line previously. Some have very good type, while others have very bad type. A lot of selection is needed at this stage.

I haven't crossed to anything. I got my larger group from somewhere in Illinois and have had them for four years now. I have found in this line it is hard for me anyways to improve them very far. This year I have decided to cross my lines together and see if I can get a larger bird and improve on the mahogany color of the bit smaller line. I have been hatching since Jan. and so far am seeing good results. But no I haven't crossed anything into my blrw line nor would I. Mike

I have found in the larger group the hens turn out prety nicer for type and size.
