Quote: Can you explain this in English? Is RR rose comb? 2 Copies? So you are going to try to keep a SLW roo with Rr (1 Rose comb (Dom) and one Single comb) I am not that great with this stuff so plain English will help me. If so how would you introduce that combo in your flock if your don't have such a roo??????? Cochins?

(R1R1) means HZ for rose comb in Wyandottes (there is also an (R2) gene that makes rose combs, but that can be discussed in another thread to keep it simple)
(R1r) means Hetro for rose comb
(rr) means wild type (single comb)

Breeding roosters that are (Rr) have NO fertility issues related to their comb. When looking at a rooster with a rose comb there is no way to know if he is carrying one (Rr) or two (RR) copies for rose comb. The way to find out is by breeding him to hens that are single comb (rr), if you get chicks with single combs (rr) then you know your rooster is (Rr) and fertility is not an issue related to the rose comb.

The second (R) alle effects the testicles and therefore acting as an inhibitor (without getting all technical, lol)

* each parent will donate one copy of the comb gene, that will give the offspring their two needed.

Your mating cross possibilitys are:

RR x rr = Rr 100% of these offspring will display a rose comb

RR x Rr = RR (HZ babies), Rr (Hetro babies) all of these offspring will display a rose comb

Rr x Rr = RR, Rr, rr

Rr x rr = Rr, rr

I know now why you can't find many SLW eggs.....

Exactly!! I know now why my SLW are so hard to get chicks out of. Sigh... So frustrating! I'm on the look out for eggs too. Even if I have to sacrifice a little on conformation for fertility I will. (no I won't be getting a hatchery bird) What good is a HUGE beautiful bird that can't reproduce? So far that's what I have. Gorgeous birds from great lines... that have had at the best 30% fertility. I haven't trimmed fluff or will I do AI. For me if a bird can't reproduce naturally I guess they won't be on my farm. I do LOVE my SLWs though and everyone that sees them says they are the most beautiful birds they've ever seen. I lost my Foley roo about a month ago and have just my Rick Hare rooster left. I sold my hens down to just 6 in hopes that less hens for him to cover will up my fertility. Well see come spring I'm hoping to get more chicks on the ground! I did keep one hen that I hatched out of my own birds and she is just beautiful! So I know that when the do make chicks they make lovely ones!

I just wanted to share with other wyandotte lovers some of the pics I took of my birds today. Love seeing everyones flocks.

Dragon above Senior Rooster

Harley youngest cockerel.

My beloved Henrietta. She just started laying last week. Can't WAIT to start hatching her eggs.

Part of the gang lol. Left to right. Dragon, Lila,Harley and originally named "Splash"

Lucky, the only survivor of my youngsters that were attacked and killed by my own dog (who no longer lives here) The one thing my guardian dog could not protect against. Lesson learned! So devastated though on both counts.

Harley, he is only about 7-8 months old now. He is HUGE!

Louise in mid itch.

Lila

One last pic of Harley because he is a ham.

Thank you very much. I really love them and am greatful to the people who I bought them from for letting me get them. So excited to hatch out my first chicks from my own crosses. I have been feeding them the fermented feed diet and can REALLY tell the difference in their feathers, eye shine and energy. Very pleased with how they are growing out.

Nice birds!

Funny, I've had several folks with fertility issues with SL this last year. The information is good to have-helps us all with the breed.
