The Wyandotte Thread

Exactly!! I know now why my SLW are so hard to get chicks out of. Sigh... So frustrating! I'm on the look out for eggs too. Even if I have to sacrifice a little on conformation for fertility I will. (no I won't be getting a hatchery bird) What good is a HUGE beautiful bird that can't reproduce? So far that's what I have. Gorgeous birds from great lines... that have had at the best 30% fertility. I haven't trimmed fluff or will I do AI. For me if a bird can't reproduce naturally I guess they won't be on my farm. I do LOVE my SLWs though and everyone that sees them says they are the most beautiful birds they've ever seen. I lost my Foley roo about a month ago and have just my Rick Hare rooster left. I sold my hens down to just 6 in hopes that less hens for him to cover will up my fertility. Well see come spring I'm hoping to get more chicks on the ground! I did keep one hen that I hatched out of my own birds and she is just beautiful! So I know that when the do make chicks they make lovely ones!
Heres Ricky and the Girls...

Have you tried test breeding your Rick Hare rooster yet to check and see if he is homozygous (RR) or heterozygous (Rr) for the rose comb? Doing this you will know in 21 days what you are dealing with for sure. Hens that are homozygous (RR) for the rose comb are fertile.

I would try this because it is a process of elimination to find out why fertility is so low. When he breeds, do you watch that he is making full contact?

I was wondering if I can get some help.

Two days ago, a neighbors dog ripped through a chain link and hardware cloth pen and killed 11 pairs of my bantam Partridge Wyandottes. I got my original birds from Jerry & Rebecca Foley and I sent them an email asking if they could give me an estimate of the value of them but I haven't heard back from them.

Can anyone help with this? I paid $30 for the original pair 2 years ago.

Today, after being told by the Sheriffs Department to contain the dogs, they again came onto my property, ripped into my barn and killed my Black Copper Marans, killed my husbands favorite bantam Cochin rooster, and injured several other birds.

I shot one of them in the hind quarters but the second one got away. We again called the Sheriffs department and they're going to declare the dogs as dangerous.

If anyone can help me with estimates, I'd appreciate it.

Laurie
Oh my so so sorry to hear that is horrible, the dogs would have to go.

Okay... lets see if I understand this correctly! If I want to see if Rick is RR I need to put him in with some hens that have straight combs like my Leghorns or something. and If he throws some straight combs then he is the desired Rr. Correct me if I'm wrong please :)
Rick was hatched from eggs purchased off ebay and out of 7 eggs I got 4 chicks 2 roos and 2 hens. One roo was a runt and just never developed well. Both the two hens had straight combs. So Ricks sisters had straight combs. not sure if that changes his genetics, I have since re-homed the Straight comb girls but,,, I did hatch some chicks out of them covered by both Rick and my late Foley rooster. None of the chicks I have hatched out of my SLWs have had straight combs all have been rose combs I checked every chick very closely, it wasn't that hard as I haven't hatched that many!! So maybe that means Rick is for sure the RR? I can still put him over the leghorns and check though.
On the actual breeding it seems that they make full contact. But I did notice that they actually breed way less then other birds I have. My BLRWs are wayyyy more inclined to do the 'deed' more often. I initially thought that was my fertility problem: they where just not breeding enough. But I'll try the leghorn thing and maybe I can find out more. A few of those FLIGHTY leggies in their coop might just liven things up for them!!

BTW Thanks sooo much for the help!!

well, my own blrw (LF) is quite active... even sneaking around behind my 5 dorking roosters' backs with their girls. LOL

maybe they just like some space... mine are free ranged and chasing the girls constantly it seems.

Correct

no each bird will carry their own genes from their parents

I would do this

I have not found any studies yet that show lack of sex drive related to the rose comb HZ (and there are about 25-30 studies proving the rose comb is related to fertility), I do know that vigor is related to sex drive.

Your welcome.

I just wanted to share with other wyandotte lovers some of the pics I took of my birds today. Love seeing everyones flocks.

Dragon above Senior Rooster

Harley youngest cockerel.

My beloved Henrietta. She just started laying last week. Can't WAIT to start hatching her eggs.

Part of the gang lol. Left to right. Dragon, Lila,Harley and originally named "Splash"

Lucky, the only survivor of my youngsters that were attacked and killed by my own dog (who no longer lives here) The one thing my guardian dog could not protect against. Lesson learned! So devastated though on both counts.

Harley, he is only about 7-8 months old now. He is HUGE!

Louise in mid itch.

Lila

One last pic of Harley because he is a ham.

LOVE THEM

Hi everyone, I am very interested in getting some Blue Laced Red W birds. I think they are gorgeous.
I am hunting someone close to me if possible as I never have ordered or shipped eggs, [just too scarey]
and would like to see some nice birds with my own eyes. I have never seen a BLRW in person
I live in Oklahoma and just about in the center east and west but little south of the middle north and south.
Anyone near me?
Thanks, Cheryl
