The Wyandotte Thread

Never really got a good answer as if my male is worth using or not. Sorry if I sound pushy, or rude, just trying to figure out if he's worth it or if I should go ahead and start looking for a better one. His tail is my main concern, is that a "bad" bunny tail, or one that isn't as severe? Thanks.

Don't worry about being pushy we all want to know what everyone thinks and their opinions :). In my opinion I would keep him for now and cull the off spring heavily. Get rid of any bunny tails and try to keep the beat tails and traits. It will take a while but it will be worth it. Keep an out for a better male. If a better one comes about then snatch him up. I think yOu have a good start. It's just going to take a lot of dedication to get to the point you and the SOP wants.

I think my young cockeral has a serious Bunny Tail, I will post a picture tomorrow, might make it easier for people to understand what to look out for. He's a LF Black.

Wanted to add my 2cents about the medicated feed too... I haven't fed medicated in years, last time I did I lost close to 50chicks because of a 'bad batch'. I feed all of my chicks from hatch to adulthood Nutrene "Poultry Feed"/"All Flock". Percentages seems to be a happy medium for all growth stages. I get good hard eggshells too.

I never give antibiotics/medicines unless they're showing signs of illness.

Are those RIR? There is a thread for those....I just can't find it. This is they Wyandotte Thread

This is one of my white-tailed pullets, I would love to hear what anyone has to say about her as far as her type. She's just 5 months old but even now I think she's a good looking girl.

I will get the pics of my possibly bunny-tailed LF Black roo later. the pictures aren't cooperating right now.

Is she a splash with incomplete lacing? What is colors were her parents?

I'm sorry BantyChickenLuv, I had something come up and haven't been back to reply. Your pictures are almost impossible to judge this bird or your pullets. They need to be in a well lit area, profile shots and alone in the cage at bird level. Place the bird in the cage on a table. Get down to where you are level with him/her and take the shots. Sometimes it helps if someone is offering treats from the side. Did you look at the bird in the photo I believe I mentioned?
I completely disagree with anyone who says to use a bunny tailed male in a breeding program. He is half your flock. You can cull until the second coming of the Christ & won't have as much success as if you'd eliminated the problem bird in the first place. This is not to say that the bird is bunny tailed, just that if it indeed were. He does appear to be in about mid to late moult, which would make the tail look worse.
I don't recommend using bunny tailed females either, but she is only going to impact a few chicks, whereas a male will again impact every chick.
I will see if I can load some photos of my birds this evening. I believe they will show you better or at least proper tails.
Jill
