In one picture he looks like a black laced red and the other a dark blue laced red. But that may be my computer screen...

There in lies my dilemma!!
Is the Black laced red a member of the Blue Laced Red family or a separate variety?

OK. Another question...Sorry but I'm still learning. We were told, or maybe misunderstood, that we should breed a Black Laced Red to improve our light Gold Laced. I'm beginning to think we misunderstood this. Is there such a thing as a Black Laced?

No difference, people say it all different ways. I try and be as clear as possible with new people. BLRW come in (3) colors, black-blue-splash. They are all BLRW, so I just write it that way to distinguish them apart.

The difference between a GLW and a black BLRW is that the BLRW carry Mh gene. So the red is a darker bay color and not orangie.

If you need to darken the GLW color and fix the type and you do not have access to a super nice GLW cock, then I would use a black BLRW cock as long as he doesn't have the same faults as the hens.
