The Wyandotte Thread

Question about the leg coloring:
Will a birds leg color 'develop' more over time-as they mature, or are they born with the color intensity they are going to have? Thank you all for the awesome information of this breed. Always so much to learn!

Their leg color can change as they mature. I hatched out a black cockerel, he was born with dark black legs. By the time he was 5 months old his legs were a beautiful gold.

This may have been asked before, but do wyandottes grow more slowly than other breeds? I have BO and RIR chicks that are about 1-2 weeks older than my SLW but are quadruple the size. She is just over 3 weeks old and is still mostly down with a few big feathers on her wings. Any thoughts?
All I can say is my own experience. Some breeders bloodlines mature slow some not. I am growing out a ton of birds right now, some are HUGE at 3 months old, some are tiny. I think some lines are just smaller in size...But good bred chickens will mature way slower than any hatchery bird will.

....wow, dark black to gold?! My partridge has nice coloring, would like the black-laced to have more, she is a bit more 'muted'. Good to know that they have a chance of getting a little more depth to them, if not- it is okay, she is still nice!

All of them are gorgeous! Now I want SLW, and Partridge... I love your SLW though. They have such crisp lacing.

I have black Wyandotte bantams that I purchased in February. The male won Res. R.C.C.L. at the last show I went too. I would love to hatch eggs from them, however, I'm a little concerned about something. I have been told by multiple sources - at one point a judge - not to buy birds from the breeder I bought them from. I'm not exactly sure why, but I did have one of the Wyandottes that I bought from that person die immeadiately afterwards, and the hen I have left had vent gleet before I treated it. Of course I didn't know about this breeder when i bought the birds. I'm worried that if I hatch them, the chicks will have hatching defects, etc. What are the chances of this happening? Would it be better just to not hatch anything from them? I know nothing about what line they are from and if they are true blacks.
