The Wyandotte Thread

Ok. Can you critique my roo? I know he's got a few issues, but I'm wondering if he's a decent starting point body-shape wise. (I know his lacing is pretty washed out and his legs are a little pink)

all thought this is not enough pictures to do a good evaluation..I will give it my best shot. I like a picture from a top view(shows width of back from shoulders to tail) Front view(shows width of leg)several side views(shows depth of chest and feet placement under body). Close facial picture(shows the comb, wattles and head width).

I really like parts of this bird. 1.) I like his comb that I can see.2.) I like his short back and 3.) tail. 4.) I like the arch of neck.5.) He looks like he has a wide rear. 6.) I love his feather quality. A bit much for some, but, not me.

Things I can only judge by the picture and could be just his stance:
1.) Leg placement, It looks like he is rocking back on his heals. 2.) Leg color(can be fixed if he does not throw this color)
3.) Small chest( could be angle of picture, he looks flat in lower chest)

For chest..look at my blue in my profile picture. His chest is much bigger than this birds picture..it is still incorrect and too small for Wyandotte's. My birds chest needs to be much fuller and rounder on the lower part of the chest to be a good front for Wyandotte's. He is young and in 6 months should fill in better for an Orpington.

That being said, I would try him and see what he throws. I do not see anything significant that could not improve a line as long as you use the correct birds with him.

OK. Better pictures. My problem is, I don't have any "good" hens to put him over right now. I've got 2 hatchery 'dottes.....a GL and a SL. And the SL has a straight comb.

This is more of a "for next year" project, so I'm really trying to justify keeping this boy to DH who wants to be rooster-less for a bit. Until Monday, I was going to keep a BLRW cockerel and cull this one, but he's all I've got left for roos now.

So. Pictures.

Comb:

Attempt at top view (emphasis on attempt. he didn't like me hanging over the fence):

Tail:

You did great with photos. Much better than I can do.

He sets on his feet correctly.

I love his rear. It is hard to find a Wyandotte with such a nice rounded rear quarter. No wry tail or split. He needs more front and that might come with age. I like him for BBS. He looks like a nice size too. How much does he weigh?

Based on him vs my meat birds......probably in the 8# range. We do a very scientific method involving a fish scale and putting the chickens a 5gal bucket.

could this wyandotte hen win a 4-h poultry show. she is almost 1.5 years old

her foot is not like that she is just in an akward position and she is not that short she is trying to go broody.
she also might be molting but im not sure.
