The Wyandotte Thread

can anyone explain what is the difference between laced and penciled? are they regional terms that mean the same thing, or is it an actual difference in coloring? am very curious as i had heard only of color-laced wyandottes, and today came across the same color-penciled wyandotte. none with pictures of course so i couldn't tell what it meant. looked on the breed pages on this site but they don't go into that much detail on the colors or what makes a correct color etc. thanks all!

Look at the pictures of the Wyandottes on feathersite.com. There are numerous photos of laced and pencilled varieties.
Laced varieties have a single lace of black(blue) around the edge of the feather in the traditional varieties of Silver Laced and Golden Laced.
Pencilled varieties in the females have what is termed triple lacing on their feathers with alternatin bands of black with either white(in Silver Pencilled) or brown(in Partridge).

The males in the laced variety are laced also like the females. Where as the males in the pencilled varieties carry more of a duckwing/black breasted red look respectively.
Thats the quick and dirty explanation.

Hello cerridwen!!!
I love feathersite.com.....it's the first site I go to for breed info and pics!!! Very comprehensive and well done. Barry Koffler, the site's creator, knows his poultry......and is a really wonderful person. In fact I saw him today and bought 3 Buff Wyandottes from him...I 'd been wanting some of these for a while. I also bought some GL Polish from him.

Hello all! I had a few questions concerning this breed. I fell in love with the looks of both SLW and GLW, and when I expand my coop and flock I would LOVE to get one of each of these. Have a few questions though..

I've heard this breed tends to be very broody, would it be a bad idea for me to get a SLW/GLW as a layer?

Are they very noisy? How are the hen's temperment? Do you get eggs often? Any help would be appearciated. I looked at the breed database but wanted some personal owner advice as well!

It's kind of going to depend on where you get them. If you get them from a hatchery they're less likely to go broody and lay you more eggs, but then they also may not look much like the breed is supposed to. I've never had GLW, but my SLWs are sweet calm girls. Mine aren't particularily noisy.....no more than any of my other breeds. Mine are pretty good layers, but they do like to go broody on me.

Thank you for the information! I would be getting these chicks from a local feed store that orders from Belt Hatchery, I think. Do you happen to own any hatchery SLW? I have one Barred Rock and one EE so far, both of who are fairly noisy girls lol! I am trying to get a good role model for them. Nah, kidding, but I am more interested in eggs and temperment. The LW got me for looks though. Sad, I want a less broody style (hatchery) but I love the color and pattern of true bred SLW/GLW..

My BLRW are so sweet and beautiful, I wouldn't care if they never laid an egg!
Mine are just babies (5 months) so I can't advise on the broodiness but they are sure wonderful birds...

P.S. just kidding about the not caring if they ever lay eggs. If mine go broody, I'll probably stick some eggs under them and LET THEM HATCH!

Also, speaking of hatching eggs. I live in a urbanish area, and can't have a ton of chickens (no more then 5) would I be able to rehome the chicks if I put some eggs, and/or chicks, under her should she become broody?

Buff: Did you breed your own? Or where did they come from?

No, I don't have any that came from a hatchery. If you're getting them from a hatchery they'll probably be less likely to go broody, but it's still possible. My BLRWs are broody a lot......3 are broody right now and one of my SLWs is. I just sold my Blue wyandotte flock, but one of those was broody too......it's just a broody breed.
