The Wyandotte Thread

Guess I just need to wait LONGER for chicks

Honestly, I have never hatched chicks out this early. I do not usually hatch out chicks until starting about a month or six weeks from now. Just keep checking, it may hit them one day and all are good then haha.

I have a SLW cockerel that just turned 3 months old. It took him forever to feather out about 9 weeks. And then today I noticed that he already has saddle feathers. My other cockerels were between 4-5 months before I saw them on them. He is from a batch of eggs I ordered and only one developed and hatched, and his egg was cracked and I filled it with wax.

Question to the experienced breeders out there even the one READING the thread in silence ;)   Is there any correlation to age and fertility?  I ask because the conversation came up on another thread about a heritage breed.  The roos didn't have good fertility till they were about a year old.... is that the same with Wyandottes?

BTW, the new roo.... his eggs are not fertile either..... so made me think..... are they really OLD enough?  They are maybe 10 months old.

Are you asking about fertility in general or specifically Wyandottes.

If Wyandottes specifically... I wait for the Roos to be 10 months and older for Columbian large fowl. I am breeding a pen with Columbian and the first hatch was 2/3 with natural light and normal breeding. The roo is 2 years old and the hens range from young hen to 3 years old. When I had Silver Laced Wyandotte I resorted to artificial insemination after plucking vent feathers to improve fertility.

SLW specifically. I have trimmed everyone in the pen. AI may be in their future. I will give them a few more weeks. I have ONE MORE ROO to try.

I just checked our SL eggs and got 100% fertility. I think it does make a difference in age, but some lines have been too inbred. The pen I tested, is all younger roosters under 10 months old and we ususally keep 3 roosters on hens at a time.

Do you have lights on them also? Fertility also is down for males in the winter months due to less daylight.

I would go with Duane Urch..he has most of the varieties.

Does anyone know if Pauls Poultry is still in business. I have been looking for some show quality golden laced and partridge wyandotte large fowl. Does anyone know of anyone in VA or TN that has any eggs, chicks, or trios for sale? I have some 2 pairs of partridge wyandotte bantams from Foleys line. and some golden laced bantam eggs in the incubator.
Thanks
Danny

I am also thinking about wyandottes, does anyone know of a breeder with dunn laced? I believe they are not an accepted color for now, and I know of a breeder of dunn solids close to me wwho I plan on contacting, but is there anyone else in TX?

Dun laced... not seen that one... I have not looked for them. Hum... that might fix my fertility problems... I have Choc Wyandottes now. Well he is split but still 50/50 choc. Now how long would that take.

Quote: Yes they are under lights. I was thinking I need to run a couple of three roos with the hens. I have not raised any together yet. I have 2 little roos but they are a few months apart. Maybe I can put them together

maybe all these little chicks I have hatched will have several roos and I can grow them up together and use them for my breeder roos.... IDK.
