Since the 15th I've been setting my SLW eggs everyday until I reached a dozen in the bator. Candled yesterday and it looks like four are developing, which is why I need to either pluck or trim the girls to hopefully bring my fertilization rate up. Just don't know which to do. I've heard that trimming is rough on the males.

I read that plucking is preferred over cutting the feathers. The shafts can be sharp and damage the genitals.
 
My 2 8 1/2 month old boys are trying to "do it" but I've watched them & their not getting close to the "right" area, lol. How long will it take for them to figure it out :idunno
 
Usually mine get the hang of it about 4-6 weeks depending on how determined they are. I had a rooster once who always mounted the hen at the wrong end! Silly rooster would just sit there and look down and the look on his face was, "Now this can't be right...". haha

I think practice makes perfect. They'll figure it out. I just hatched chicks from a cockerel that was 6 months old.
