Tips for removing maximum goop before dyeing eggs

Don't use the dye tablets you get at the store. The instructions are to dissolve those in vinegar, which takes the spots right off of the quail eggs and leaves the shells rubbery. I made that mistake the first time I tried to dye quail eggs. I use food colouring in water now.

Here's some I dyed this morning with 1 tsp white vinegar to 1/2 cup hot water and 10-15 drops of (very expired) food coloring. Didn't really notice a lack of spots afterward. Granted, I left them in for less than five minutes. Were you using a water-vinegar mix, or just straight vinegar?

The celadon eggs came out more weakly colored, even if slightly. No idea why (and I'd guessed it would be the other way around).

Yeah, those easter egg dye packs say to mix them with straight vinegar. I might try your way next year.

I think it must be different for some packs than for others.

All the ones I've seen call for a tablespoon or two of vinegar, then enough water that you can submerge an egg in it.

Edited to add an example:

At present, I can zoom in on the instructions on the back of the box.
It says to dissolve the dye tablet in 1 tablespoon of vinegar, then add 1/2 cup water, then dye eggs.
This specific kit is just under $3, brand name PAAS
