The Wyandotte Thread

How are you checking for fertility? The easiest way is to leave a couple of eggs on the counter for several days and then look at the yolk when you crack each into a bowl. If the egg is fertile you will see a little bullseye about 1/8 inch in diameter on the yolk. Then start saving your eggs to hatch.
No bullseye...your roosters aren't hitting the mark.

Question: I keep checking for fertility in my 2 Wyandotte girls 10 months old around Valentines Day (the 2 W roo's are the same age) & they don't look fertile yet to me. How long does it take Wyandotte's to get going? They are being bred all the time but I don't think the times I've watched that those 2 boys have figured out the "right area" ,lol. Also how long after pullets start laying do their eggs finally get the size they'll end up being & I think I read where you shouldn't use pullet eggs for hatching? I'm dying to try to hatch some Dottes but don't want to waste my time & my AG broody's time either

I started hatching the SLW as soon as the eggs were an OK size..... not fertile but I tried. I do have a few chicks from pullet SLW eggs so no complaining about pullet eggs.

I've done that exact scenario & I don't see the bullseye (I've checked some of my Bantam eggs that I know are fertile & can see the bullseye on them) I just hope they get it figured out soon :barnie

When I decided to get chickens I knew I wanted a SLW. I have a mixed flock of birds I find pretty, I have chose them for feather and egg color. I don't plan on showing or breeding, but I think Mrs Pots is just as pretty as can be. My 8 yr old son said she looks like a cake and my 11 yr old daughter said she looked like a old lady. She has the sweetest personality and has to be shooed in the hen house every evening.

I think she is just a little camera shy...

I am on day 10 and all eight pullet eggs are fertile with active little chicks! I guess cockerel 02 if fertile, this is the second hatch sired by him and he is 7 months old. The first hatch was the test hatch and all eight eggs hatched and the chicks are in their new home. This is the first time I have tried to hatch pullet eggs, they are from two different females. All five are laying now.

Three breed pens of Wyandottes and two Cochin pens have eggs in the incubators. Already have 32 chicks at three weeks of age and a set to pick up tomorrow from a friend who is helping me hatch. My incubator full comes out on the 11th. We are having a nice late winter hatch!

Hello everyone I want to ask a favor of my fellow Wyandotte lovers. I am hoping to start a new Wyandotte illustration but I only have good reference photos of silver laced and partridge. I am hoping to do a piece with a different colored Wyandotte. Not sure what color yet but I wanted to know if anyone had some really nice pictures of their show birds I could use? I don't want to go through the thread and use pictures as reference without permission. I am looking for posses that flatter the bird and show off its type and coloration. No butt shots, blurry or odd positioned birds. I would love to have reference for a rooster and hen so I can combine them into one piece. If you haven't already you can check out two pieces I have already done of wyandottes. Practice makes perfect and I really want to make a piece that will make people say "Wow, what a Gorgeous bird!". Also just because i don't pick your picture of your bird doesn't mean i don't like your bird or I don't think it is beautiful. Sometimes one photo just stands out more for what i am trying to accomplish rather than another. I have that "Eureka" moment when I find the right photo and just go with it. Multiple photos are better than just one. Anyone interested in helping me?
