The Wyandotte Thread

I have a question for the masses.

Do breeders use their Roosters with their own offspring and do you mate hatchmates to each other?

I'm interested in the various answers and reasoning behind those answers. Please remember that I'm a longtime boxer breeder and our breeding practices may vary.

i believe in LINE breeding. it's easiest done by using father to daughters and mother to sons. depending on how many hens and roos you have, they're not going to always be related. if you have 2 breeding pens it's easier. keep all your best girls together, young or old, for hen-based family lines, and use the best roos from the opposite pen, either older or younger.

a better plan (that i haven't been able to implement yet) is rotational line breeding... google bob blosl. he raises reds and rocks, i believe, and has written several articles about it (tends to repeat himself, but worth looking over).

Anyone ever have fertility issues? the first 7 eggs I incubated from my wyandotte pair 6 were clear and One blood ring. These are also my hens first 7 hens eggs and she is in with an awesome roo, but should I try my other less nice roo or give them time?

Wyandottes are known to have fertility issues. It is linked with the rose comb.

I try VERY HARD to NEVER breed brother and sister. Father Daughter and Mother Son seems the most common. Sometimes you have to work with what you have but the results will not be great.
