Update on Harry the white dott:

Harry is still with us-so he's doing better. He went outside today(in a big Saint Bernard cage) so he could get some fresh air and grass. He's been eatting fine-that boy loves yogurt! He'll be inside until that butt heals up-so a long time I'm guessing. He's just on antibiotic water now, no more shots. So, a day at a time. But I'm glad he's still here with us.

I lost my choc pullet today. not 100% what happened except the roo was too rough on her. she was limping so I took her out several days ago. she never would put any weight on her leg really. she may have had internal injuries I couldn't see. I doo have some young pullets growing out about 4 months old so all is not lost.

a raccoon got hold of my foley girl (black laced red) last night before the dog could get there, but he did chase off the coon and protect her till I got there... so now she's in the hospital cage with bite marks around her head and neck... not sure how badly damaged, but she's still alive. her balance is messed up and she just sleeps a lot right now. i'll try getting her to eat and drink some a bit later again.

Oh No!!! Give her an antibiotic(IM)....racoons are full of bacteria. Hope she gets better.

a raccoon got hold of my foley girl (black laced red) last night before the dog could get there, but he did chase off the coon and protect her till I got there... so now she's in the hospital cage with bite marks around her head and neck... not sure how badly damaged, but she's still alive. her balance is messed up and she just sleeps a lot right now. i'll try getting her to eat and drink some a bit later again.

there are too many variables to say for sure... it's possible, yes, but if he doesn't have the right genetics, then I would say no...

most of my best laced birds had very nice lacing as chicks as well. (bantam cochin and Wyandotte). these 2 girls came from the same breeding pen (bantam cochin silver laced) and obviously got different components of the genetics required...

this girl's lacing is improving slightly, the feathers becoming wider and the lacing more defined.


this girl, while having much better type, has no visible lacing at all other than just the tips (spots).
but because she has better type, she will be going in the pen with my laced roo, in the hopes of producing better offspring.

same for this girl, tho she does have slightly better lacing it is still considered 'incomplete'. but she has excellent type now so again will be going in the pen to help improve type over color, in the hopes that her offspring will have better lacing and type than she does.


these pics were taken about a month ago, the girls are nearing point of lay now and have very nice cochin shape.

can chickens get rabies? raccoons are frequent carriers.

Chicks molt several time (and the feathers do change). Depending on your line of birds, they do get better with each molt. If it is just bad genetics all the molting in the world will not fix it. The last juvie molt will give you an idea of the lacing. (10-14 weeks). Some of my old hens improve with each yearly molt, while others do not, they just look so much better after the molt is over.



These are horrible pictures but you can see how horrible the lacing is. This chick was 5 weeks old.

I need to update pictures of her. Her lacing is pretty darn nice.

I am so glad your dog saved her. Hopefully she will recover quickly.

but yes, thankfully the dog knows how to tell me where someone is, when I tell him to 'find her'.
