When they are old enough to start growing in their mature feathers...then the males grow the rooster tails and pointed hackle feathers.

Some you can tell much earlier because some males start to develop a very red comb at a month...so clearly male.

In some colors you can tell early because the color is different between the sexes...like in partridge. The partridge males develop a black chest.
 
My 17 week old Blue Wyandotte pullet has black on her pink comb. Is this normal? She is a hatchery stock from Pritchett. Is it a sign of cardiovascular issues because I lost a BSL hen at age 15 months and she had similar coloring in her comb months before she died. Also Pritchett Hatchery stock.
