The Wyandotte Thread

WyandotteTX, I found that the same thing with duns. Our duns had great type and a few judges wanted to place them BOB if they were recognized, I am pretty sure that they get it from the blacks. When I started the dunlaced project, the silver laced rooster didnt have good type but the duns added better type to the project and I ended up getting silver laced with good type from them.

I wish someone here had barred wyandotte bantams. I have seen them advertised somewhere in normal barred, dun barred, and khaki barred. I tried to make barred with a cuckoo sport that came from my whites, crossed with a nice barred rock bantam that was too wide. We got great color from the chicks but of course, the one with best type and color had a single comb, the others with rose combs looked like rose combed barred rocks.

My favorite coloring in them is that pretty"pigeon blue"....kind of a medium blue...not too dark and not too light.

The only guy I knew who had REAL Barred wyandottes was a guy in Delaware named Claus Twisselman. He imported about a dozen and half birds from Europe about 10 years ago when you could. He worked pretty hard on getting them to look like good wyandottes. I dont really know if he is still raising them. Your best bet is to join the Wyandotte Breeders of America because they put out a list of breeders with what they breed. I think there was another guy in Alabama raising them also. But some people raise Cuckoo and call them Barred when they are two very different things. True Barred will look just like the barring on Barred Rocks.
The Duns I raised and saw from other breeders were really good Wyandottes. Its a shame they havent been pushed more to get admitted into the APA or ABA. The newness of them as a breed was somewhat taken away by the BLR craze that has swept the Wyandottes in the last 5 to 10 years.
Then when it comes to the breeders that show they only concentrate on breeds they can win with like Black, White, Partridge and to a certain extent Silver Laced lately. The other varieties dont get near as much attention from the dedicated breeders. Solid colored birds win more at the shows so that is what they want.

So true. I was a member of the wyandotte club but havent renewed in a couple years. The duns have been around for awhile, it seems like alot of the breeders of them hoard them and demand way too much for them it seems. Around here the partridge are decent but its mostly black and whites, some columbians and buffs show up from time to time but not as much.

Yes I too have been a member of the Wyandotte association several times in the last 15 years. Most of the established breeders are going to charge $25 to $50 a piece for their birds. There is a breeder here in Texas I know pretty well that raises alot of the varieties and raises some really great Partridge, Blacks and Silver Laced. I got my Duns and Columbians from him also. Very nice man, retired pastor in East Texas. He raises alot of birds though, he is a renowned cochin bantam breeder also. He told me that he would raise a 1000 chicks a year! Unbelievable.... On top of that if you know much about cochins you know he has to AI all of those cochin bantams too....lots of work.
I have been to see him a few times. Would always help you out with birds and a great promoter of wyandottes and cochins.

It is indeed too bad Dun has fallen by the wayside in the BLR craze. I find the duns far more attractive!

I live in the PNW but whites are very practical here. People forget the PNW has dry spots too- I live in a desert!

Ultasol, isnt that area called the Paloose?

The Duns are really much nicer in so many ways than the BLR because their type is so close to the Blacks that you can cross them with. The BLR craze is looked at with a wary eye by most of the wyandotte breeders. I can understand that too bc there has been so many junky BLR sold out there. The quality of the LF BLR are pretty good but the bantam ones I have seen are lacking in type a little bit. They may be out there though and I just havent seen them yet.

Here is a question for everyone. Does anyone know of any breeders working on Birchen or Brown Red Wyandotte bantams? They are recognized ABA varieties but I have never seen any of them and have only known one person that was working on them about 10 years ago. I have read in my Wyandotte Rare Varieties book that you can create Birchen by crossing Columbian and Black. Just wondering if anyone has seen them before or ever tried that?

Hi WyandotteTX. I am just wondering if you can give us some information about this book your talking about "Wyandotte Rare Varieties" as it sounds very interesting.
Thanks
