The Wyandotte Thread

Congratulations Cloverleaf! Sounds like you're getting a really good hatch! Yup we need pics!!

My best BLRW hen has gone broody on me.

Just thinking about separating out breeding trios and she has to go and get all hormonal on me. I don't have the heart to break her of it tho she looks so warm in this cold weather and gets so mad at me when I throw her out of the nest box!

Good luck breaking her if you decide to....I had 3 of mine that sat almost all last summer! Nothing I did would make them stop so I finally gave up. They quit when they started molting in the late summer. I have found mine to be a very broody breed.

These are some pics of wyandottes I hatched out on Jan.29,2010.

This first batch are for a buff columbian project I'm starting. They are sex-linked. I used two GL roosters and four columbian hens in different coops. The gold looking chicks are females and the silvery looking are the males in this first breeding.

Jane, as of this morning, 100% of the your eggs that went into lockdown have hatched!!! The last one to hatch looks a little small, but maybe once SHE rests a bit she won't seem so weak...

But I am SO EXCITED about this hatch!! I think I've ended up with 4 splash, and only 1 black, but I have to wait till the go into the brooder to be sure!! YAY!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Katy that is NOT good news! I'd try to dunk her in a bucket of water but she'd just turn into a chicken popsicle!!

I've got a wire cage I'm gonna try when it warms up a bit. Either that or I'll tuck some eggs under her! Never hatched with a broody before. Do they make very good mothers? I almost put up an auction this week but then they changed the weather forecast on me and back to below zero again next week. So good thing I didn't. Way too cold to ship!

Cedar those are some beautiful chicks! Congratulations!

Cloverleaf what a fantastic hatch! You must be doing something right! And from ebay eggs to boot!!

The fertility and hatchability from these guys has been amazing so maybe I'm doing something right too! lol Can't wait to see pics and try and figure out what you got!

I don't own any Wyandottes, but I've been reading along, and they are some very pretty birds. I love that they come in so many colors.

Do the bantam Wyandottes lay as well as the full-sized? I'm deciding on some breeds to lay eggs for my family, but would prefer bantams since they take up less space.

My GLW just hatched a chick, and she's super protective, but lets me pick up her baby and look at it. She's sometimes a little over-eager to make a nest, and scratches the baby clear across their cage (a giant-size dog crate on my porch) and growls at everyone that stops to look inside!

She's a GREAT momma, and for a hatchery bird, I was really surprised!

5 splash, 8 blue, 1 black. (Oh, and there's 5 d'uccles in the brooder, so don't let the backward-colored stripes in the pics confuse you!)
