The Wyandotte Thread

I admit to not having read through this whole thread, but I did do a forum search (I wish searches would turn up individual posts rather than threads) and didn't find specific info.

Is anyone here raising (and selling eggs) standard size Partridge Wyandottes?

Thanks,
Tim

Katy,
what has worked for me in the past is putting setting hens in a wire cage, with wire floor suspended off the ground. It usually breaks them pretty quickly from wanting to set.
Anytime we ever tried to use any of Wyandottes to sit they would always give up setting about halfway thru. They always wanted to set but just werent that serious about it. Now our bantam cochins on the other hand? they loved it haha.

I've tried the wire floors, moving the nest boxes ( I use covered kitty litter pans) around to different locations, taking them out of the nest boxes multiple times a day but I've had several hens that nothing worked to break them. I finally gave up!

Thats frustrating then for sure. Especially when you are expecting eggs and trying to raise birds. Ah patience

Katy what has worked best for me is to move them to another pen or coop. A big change like that seems to break them. After about a week I put them back in their breeding pen and the broodiness is over.

I agree Duane, this is what I do as well. Mike

I generally don't have another pen to move them to, other than a small hutch that I often raise chicks in. Even putting them in the hutch (which is up off the ground with a wire bottom) hasn't broken some of them. I think they are just very stubborn chickens!!
