The Wyandotte Thread

I just PMed greathorse about splitting an order with Paul's Poultry for some birds, but anyone else in Colorado or even Southern Wyoming want to split an order for some of his birds? Looking for Blue Laced Reds and Gold Laceds mostly.

Wyandottes don't turn red in their comb early in both genders do they? I have 3 four week olds and they all have that pinkish red goin' on as well as the start of wattles. My guess is that they are all roos. Which makes me really upset because I got them out of the pullet bin - I cannot believe that 3 out of 3 from the sexed chicks are roosters. Soo maddening!!!

Nope...my pullets don't get a bit red till they're much, much older than that.

So when can you tell with Wyandottes which ones are the roosters and which are the hens or do I have to wait months rather than weeks? Mine are 6 weeks old and I think they are all hens but is it too early to tell? Their combs are little, I don't see any even tiny spurs on the backs of their legs and wattles have just started to come in the last two weeks, still small and pink but definitely not red - all hens?

I had purchased some blue foley eggs last fall but they stopped laying before I was able to get them.

Congrats on the new additions!!. Can you post some pictures? I'm interested to see what is what so maybe i can tell what i have. One is really light, one is blue with white/cream underneath and one is all blue....?

how old are your chicks? aren't mine younger then yours? (I'll upload pics later, the 'puter is not playing nice). I figure any black and whites will be all black, and light blue or darker blue will still end up as some shade of blue and the white one (with a shade of green as my son calls it- really it's a shade of pale blue) will be white. now if that one has nice type, I'll hold it back for my project of a white laced red.

I got mine shipped as a day old last thursday.

I am pretty sure I have heard Katy mention this more than once, but....in most Wyandotte chicks you can tell which ones will be cockerels pretty early on by how big their legs and feet are, they will usually be much thicker. Also the the cockerels are usually the biggest chicks, and usually they will be the the first to show waddles. That seems to hold true in my BLRWand SLW, however in my Blues I still get fooled now and then.
