The Wyandotte Thread

I did a couple of blog posts about my 3 month old BLRW (hatched on Feb. 19th from eggs I got from 3 different breeders) and my readers LOVED them. Of course, how could they not? They are such beautiful birds!

I love the striking contrast of my "Splash" (red laced white) pullet!

And I'm very pleased with this blue laced red cockerel:

I am fascinated as I watch my black laced reds fade to blue laced reds!

I didn't know they did that! Their lacing was completely black before and it's changing to blue.
It's incredibly beautiful!

I've got another 23 eggs in the bator ~ candled and due in 4 more days.
I can't wait!!

I LOVE these birds!

Hello Nancy!!!!
I agree with McSpin!!! Awesome BLRW's .......and I checked out your website yesterday!!! I greatly enjoyed reading your blogs and viewing all your fantastic photos(wish mine looked half as good).
Kathy
P.S. I really enjoy seeing everyone's pics on this thread!!!! Wyandottes are definitely one of my favorite breeds. They possess everything I'm looking for in a chicken.....all in one beautiful, clucking(or crowing) package.

growing out my first wyandottes in years, ive had one bantam partridge wyandotte hen and she was the sweetest lil thing!! im growing bantam BLRW, standard BLRW and SLW. I will be breeding them next year, i have lines from 3 sources for both standard colors. ill get new photos to post

Thank you Steve and Kathy for the kind words!
These are the first BLRW I've ever raised and I am SO in love with them. The White laced red pullet is so cute ~ anytime I'm out in the yard she comes up and stands right in front of me (or lays down in front of me) and stares me right in the eye. I ask her if she wants me to pick her up and she scooches a little closer. Then I pick her up and pet her or sit her on my lap if I'm sitting down. She'll sit on my lap and just watch the other chickens run around the yard. It's so sweet! She's the only one that does it but the others will all let me pet them. Only Splash asks to be picked up though.

I've got 23 more BLRW eggs in the bator and their due to hatch this coming week. I can't WAIT!!

Nancy ~ who just finished shearing her flock of Shetland sheep today. Well, I don't actually shear them, I pay someone to do it but is still an incredible amount of work. I am so glad that it's over for another year and now I can sit back and enjoy the lambs AND the fleeces!

Good Morning!!!!
I'm pretty sure that the Silver Laced Wyandotte was the first and the original Wyandotte color. It originated in New York and was named after a Native American tribe. Supposedly they were first called American Sebrights or Sebright Cochins.......Dark Brahmas,Spangled Hamburgs and Cochins are amongst the foundation breeds. Golden Laced Wyandottes were created by breeding Silver Laced Wyandotte hens to a Partridge Cochin/Brown Leghorn rooster(called Winnebagos).
I believe either Dominiques or Javas are America's oldest breed.

Hello Nancy!!!!
I find most Wyandottes extremely friendly. I see this trait even in the Wyandotte hybrids I'm brooding inside......they're the first to follow me around, sit on my lap and to fly up and perch on my shoulder. I find them to be very attractive hybrids......most are already spoken for(of course, I'll end up keeping some.....smile). Here's a picture I just took of 2 SLW hybrids.
Nancy (and everyone else incubating eggs), I wish you the best of luck with your hatch!!!! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!! I just had 6 BLRW chicks hatch today......I'm thrilled!!!!
Kathy
