The Wyandotte Thread

We could easily move to the Pacific West as my husband's job is looking for people to move to WA. Unfortunately it is to Hanford and I understand that is more desert-like. Oh Well, guess you can't have everything??

I love these pix. We have 13 wk old blues and blue lacewings, and it looks like from your pix we have 2 BLRW chickens too. What do all of these initials stand for? We chose to get some Wyandottes because this breed seemed to fit our family. The man we got them from told us the chicks (at 1 wk when we picked them up) were blues and "duckwing". We did have one Splash who died at 4 wks. Also- can anyone explain the difference in comb- all of ours seem to have the Rosecombs- flat and wide with a little button on the top. At 13 wks we notice that some are red and some are black. We are trying to "hear" which ones are roos, they have recently started crowing in the morning. Please let me know how to get pix on here.

Pictures are under UPLOADS on the top blue menu bar. Click it and follow instructions. I found the task easy when I opended a second window and practiced for a bit. Wyandotts have Rose combs. The differences in anotomy are poster under Learning on the bar at the very top of the page.
Spash Wyandottes are one variety of the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte.

Well we do adjust BUT not much outside work is done by me between 08:00 and 19:00. We get up early, and take a nap in the middle of the day, siesta time it is ! I do put a frozen water bottle in their drinking water but usually not in the foot bath although I have seen some postings on BYC where there is ice in a tray. If I look around and see the Finch and other song birds, I think "Well those tiny birds tolerate this heat so other animals can adjust. I know that chickens have been domesticated and that chickens are domesticated animals but all they seem to need is a little water evaporation on their feet and they are alert and active. BTW my chickens sleep outside in warm weather.

Your laced BLRW is just gorgeous and I am jealous but I will forget when my girls are making eggs for me. MY layers from last year were eaten by predators

I am looking for some hatching eggs for the second week of Aug. after the 8th. I would love to have BLR or Dun. Thanks for letting me know....I want to get either eggs or chicks from a breeder. I live in the panhandle of Texas.

Those darn predators!

what was it? The predator that has gotten most of my chickens is a Bob Cat! It went right through 3 strands of hotwire with my Blue Wyandotte rooster! We increased the height of the fence and put the hotwire back on top and so far it has kept it out! But before we got the fence fixed, it came back scared one of my EEs and it flew out and my husband heard it and chased the Bob Cat, but it grabbed the chicken anyway and ran off with it!

I love seeing the wildlife here but leave my chickens alone!!!
