The Wyandotte Thread

Couple of questions regarding the Wyandotte as a breed....

1) Ive read they are slow to lay (which is ok) does this mean they are also slow to flesh out too?

2) Is there a list of Wyandotte shows anywhere or poultry shows posted anywhere?

3) Anybody have any weights on 4-5 month old birds?

Thank you for your time...

I can only chime in with one answer on the slow to lay.

I guess it depends, I do think wyandottes are supposed to be slower to lay. The first of mine started laying right at 20 weeks, the others are following. Right now I have three of seven that are laying and all are 23 weeks old. I think sex-links or stars start laying earlier at 16-18 weeks. I have heard on this forum that wyandottes often don't lay the first egg until 24 to 26 weeks old.

Mine are large fowl, not bantams. Also have to add that they are hatchery birds from Privett's in New Mexico. That might make a difference since the hatchery birds are supposedly bred for egg production regardless of breed.

KEV What do you mean by "promising" and how old are your BLRW ? You see it all depends on what you are have in mind and the age is also significant.

I got concerned about the amount of barring on the two original chicks plus some confided to me that their color was "very light" as if they may have been from generations of splash-splash matings.

These two newer ones seem to have deeper red and maybe better lacing.. noticed one of them still has some his baby chick feathers on wing(last pic right above the pullet), these show lacing, not barring. I'm probably jumping to conclusions out of my inexperience with lacing patterns, it seems that these two maybe be 'better' as for lacing and depth of red..

What exactly are the things I'm supposed to watch out for, color and pattern wise on BLR?

How do their body type look so far? I don't know how old these are.. can try to find out and get back with their age..

That's kind of what I was thinking. I still hope maybe she's just feathering in more slowly because she's a different breed...but at 1 week old she doesn't have any noticeable tail feathers while all of my other chicks have very distinct little tails.
