The Wyandotte Thread

Have heard bad reports about McMurray's birds, as far as exhibition quality.

Ideal Poultry Farms got most of their Wyandotte Bantams from Andy Anderson. We have some of their Buff Wyandotte Bantams and they look really good. Need some work, but don't we all! The Ideal birds have some white shanks from Andy suing some Buff Orpington to improve color and fertility. I talked to Andy about and he suggested we use them this year and ull heavy in the offspring. Starting to get some eggs this week. We are using a nice male from Superior Farms.... a Lou Horton line.

You are still better off getting some from an exhibition breeder.

I'm so glad that's you and not me... Hatch lots of Partridge! I'm very sure I finally figured my rooster out. First very successful AI was yesterday. I think I'll have chicks by the end of the month!

LOL...funny. I owe you one....what is that stringmans name in Ohio..Lou? Lew?

Easy now, He's a nice guy. Whatever that means. I thought he stopped by your place on the way home from beating all those Wyandottes with a Guinea...Maybe my mind is failing me...Nevermind

Anyway, enough fun. Back to business. Do you pluck/trim your big birds? I have in the past but I think it's partly too cold right now. It was -11 yesterday morning and about 0 this morning (Sorry, TX, 22 sounds kinda good right now). I plucked a couple on Tuesday and now they act all cold. I guess I can understand why

Does trimming seem to make an immediate difference?

The first Wyndottes I every owned came from there...insane is putting it mildly. They were flighty , single combed, wrong body type, crazy, hard to handle(wait I could never even catch them) My whole flock calmed down when I sold them. I swore off the breed forever!

Then I saw Foley's birds....they are calm, beautiful, friendly. If you like the looks of wyndottes there are many people on BYC that have and sell beautiful birds. They may be pricier but so worth every penny I spent.

I will never again purchase a bird from a hatchery.

their SLW are pretty poor, their White Wyandottes are that bad. My dad has a roo that is enormous with very nice body type.

The Silver Laced Wyandottes from Murray McMurray? A joke, if you ask me.

Their color was very poor, ranging from "spangled" to nearly black, their bodies very thin, tails very erect and tall, THREE of mine after culling had cockeyed/twisted and hunched backbones, and a couple had internal laying issues by 2 yrs old.

oh well.

I got some decent blue wyandottes from Privett. They are friendly but won't jump on you lap accept Alice and Rubert like to hop on my shoulders and be petted. This picture is not the best; but they do look like wyandottes. The boys backs are bit too long to me. Most of the girls are showing the teepee tails.

Yeah I am gonna have to break down and order some good quality ones from a breeder. I am trying to wait for this messy winter stuff to pass so the risk of the new chicks getting stuck in shipping is gone.

I did get some pure wyandotte eggs from a fellow BYCer however, a bad winter storm went through that week and caused the eggs to get stuck in shipment. Unfortunately none of the eggs made it to hatch.

Hmmmmm....guess there is a big difference because ours run at your feet when you go out to feed them. Pretty birds though.
