Our are from private breeders and are not aggressive at all. My girls are doing 4-H with them this year and love them to death....the Comets we have on the other hand would be "stew" if they didn't lay so nicely

Sounds like you got a really bossy one there.

Hi frenchlakechickens
The group I have are from Privette hatchery. A couple of the girls are mean; however most are more aloof. I do have some sweet girls in the flock that like to be interacted with. I think that the temperment is an individual thing. You can get bullies from any breed.
Birds from breeders tend to be sweeter as most breeders tend to breed for good temperment along with the SQ.

Shucks, I am not good on the square footage formula, my dad is the carpenter at our place. Always think bigger as chicken math seems to kick in.
Hopefully some who is good at math can give you a better answer. There is alot of differing opinions as to how much square footage per bird. It kinda runs between 2 sq ft to 4 sq ft per different folks.

Welcome to the Wyandotte thread!
SLW- silver laced wyandotte
GLW- Golden Laced wyandotte
CW colombian wyandotte
I hope that helps
7x6 is 42 sq feet which at 4 sq feet a bird is good for 10.5 chickens... RIRs get big and so do Wyandottes. Your run at 12x24 is 288 sq feet and at the recomended 10 sq feet A bird it will fit 28 birds. I would go with 10 birds in that set up. Have fun with your birds!
Ah I forgot to add my own breed... BLRW- Blue laced Red Wyandotte

thank you for the reply! I gave our GL Wyandotte hen (hatchery hen but she is pretty and in great health and feather) a bath today. I am taking her to our poultry 4-H meeting tonight. I am thinking someone might have have a better environment for her. If there was a bigger area or free range or individual cages she would do OK but she does not seem compatible with the others in my coop/run.
If the show quality Wyandottes are more gentle in nature I would be interested in getting some, esp. the blue laced (gorgeous!). Anyone in Indiana or IL with them? I see mostly banties that are show quality and I prefer the standards.
How do you post pics to the messages?
Thanks!
Paula
