Is it safe to guess gender at 4 weeks for BLRW?

I have three.. two that look similar and a third that is "pinker and wider" in the comb

Girl? (I have two that look just like this)

Boy?

I LOVE my pretty babies. They are the most social and sweetest birds I have right now

Ok, so this post is HUGE but has anyone had issues with Hatchery chicks ending up being really ugly pullets? I really hope maybe this is just a breed thing but my 3.5wk old SLW are still mostly black. There is nothing to indicate a pattern on them at all. Is this normal?

This one turned out to look like this. Taken just before laying age, 18wks round about. Yep, same bird as I remember her having almost no comb where as the other 2 pullets we had/have, have big ugly ones. This girl is my favorite.

I got these from my uncle's feed store, I never asked what hatchery he gets from though.

Well I hatched several more blue laced reds and quite a few barred wyandotte bantams and I think Im going to shut the incubator off for the year. Time to grow out what I have and cull down to the best. Ive got several nice looking blue bantams growing out also.

hatchery stock birds are very seldom to the size, type, or color quality one would expect. You will have very mixed results from one hatchery to the next however you cannot really expect the high quality specimen from a hatchery that you will get from a breeder / showman.

I need at least 1 girl. I only have 3. Bummer. I guess I will wait until they get bigger. What should I be looking for?

The males will develop wattles in a week or two.
