The Wyandotte Thread

Yeah....been a busy year, that is for sure. I am ready for hatching season to be over. Now we have something plucking chickens one by one from the barn. Nathan and I snuck down there to see what it was because the trap was being messed with, but nothing was in the trap. It was a very large coon.....time for a bigger trap. going to catch that bad boy tonight!

Do you have any SL bantams available? Specifically a roo or cockerel with good type & great lacing?

We don't have the bantam SLWs anymore....sorry.
We also don't ship to Canada. The export thing is really a big headache and there is a ton of paperwork.

Ok guys I need your help, Got this Wyandotte from a swap, But dont know the age or sex. i beliee it is a pullet.. The wattles and comb are not bright red..they are a dull pink.. alot of people hae been calling it a roo, But someone said that there wasnt enough white on the back side to be a roo. What do you think?

I'll have to see if I have my list somewhere. I bought a dozen eggs and only got two to hatch. I was lucky enough to get a pair...but I need more (of course).

To the person that asked about Paul's Poultry in FL:

I've gotten three shipments of assorted from Paul's Poultry and just ordered forty of the silver penciled to be delivered this week. They are absolutely GORGEOUS birds. I have quite a few blues and am speechless over the color. My three BLR's are a deep red over a soft bluish lacing. The whites are flawless. I have a pair of golden laced and a pair of buffs that I hadn't planned on keeping but I can't bear to part with them. I can't get over the size and type of the buff pair. I can already tell that they have superb tails from behind. They are large, hearty, friendly birds. The quality is so far ahead of any wyandottes I've seen anywhere else. (No offense to any other wyandotte breeders that I haven't seen).

The buffs from Pauls came from David Lafeber and the Blues came from us with all the kinks worked out.

They are nice birds. We like to give credit to breeders if we pick up birds and start selling from them, but others don't for some reason.

Ill stick with the Foleys unless I want something they dont have!! First class people that have first class birds and give first class service!!!!!

Congrats, Tanner. Glad you are pleased with your birds. I too have some Buffs from Lefeber, they are big gorgeous birds. I have about 25 of them currently and have really been impressed with them, but for such large chickens the hens lay a small egg.
You are lucky to have gotten some SP they are fairly rare, I hope they turn out well for you.

Rare Feathers, sorry to hear your hatching eggs didnt turn out well with the GL. Hatching eggs are convenient and that is all you can say about them. I got 5 dozen eggs earlier this spring and hatched 5 with 3 living past the first two days....its a crap shoot honestly. But sometimes its the only way you can get the variety you want.
For years you couldnt find good SL bantams but now there are some really good birds out there, but GL had a spurt of interest about 10 years ago and there was improvement but they have kind of dropped off the map. In a perfect world I would take the best GL I could find and cross them with best of the SL to try and improve type etc.....But I am too busy with SP bantams to take on another project at the moment I think...

I think I might have went a little too far with the birds this year.....even Mrs. Turbo has been making some comments about how many birds we have growing out and running around the farm this year, not to mention the feed bill (over $700 a month) Last year I grew out over 150 BLRW and ended up keeping two cockerels and 6 pullets from the group...this year I planned on only growing out 50 since there really was a big improvement in type...but I am afraid there are well over a 100 running around. I think its probably the Silver Penciled Bantams that pushed her over the edge...LOL, well over 130 of those devils around here...and the bantams really do have to be close to full grown to see what kind of tail they have.

I might be the only one to tell you this Jerry but thats AWESOME you have hatched out so many SP bantams. That really should give you enough to be able to pick out some really good birds. You know I will take some off of your hands

I dont know exactly how many Ive hatched out so far this year but probably half of what you have.....
Heres the pressing SP question.....have you been able to breed out some of the duskiness and keep good pencilling on your young females so far?
