The Wyandotte Thread

Wow! So Mrs. Turbo has nicer Wyandottes than Mr. Turbo? Did not know that. We all knew she was better looking than him, but did not know her birds were better looking than his!

Sorry Jerry, she got dibs first...

Here are some pics of a few of the BLRW I am growing out from the Turbos! They are looking good to me but they are my first Wyandottes so I wanted to see what everyone here thinks of them as potential breeders...

Well, right now they are really too young to tell much without being able to handle them. If they feel good when you pick them up, if they have good heads and no DQs, and if they are the right color for you, you'll need to raise them out to see what you actually have in the end.

Well, I prefer taking a ziplock bag, adding a small amount of corn meal, flour and Lawry's Seasoned Salt.Shake the bag with one or two pieces of Wyandotte, Orpington etc. Then place in a cast iron skillet of hot oil till fully cooked! That makes a "good" Wyandotte!

I have a question about my barred wyandotte bantams. I got hatching eggs the end of March and hatched out 3 barred, 2 black, and a white and a splash(?). One of the barred is darker than the other 2. I thought I had a trio of barreds, but yesterday my daughter told me one of my "hens" was crowing! After comparing my barreds to some of the other wyandotte bantams I got from someone else, I'm afraid all 3 of my barreds are roosters! The white looks like a hen, and I'm not sure about the black and splash. Which ones do I breed together to get more barreds? Is it typical in barred breeding to have solid white and blacks and barreds?

Thanks for your help.

Well, Barred is fairly uncommon in Wyandottes. I would try mating to the blacks and the white. I think you'll be more successful with the blacks, but idk. Eventually, after a couple more generations, you should get mostly Barred babies. Just keep picking the barred when you have them. I certainly don't think it's normal not to get all barred chicks. That indicates some recent crossing.
