The Wyandotte Thread

Nice colorful flock!
I read some of your blogs and wondered what brand of small incubator you use? Do you have
decent success with it?

I'm using two Hova-bators with turners, but I think I should add a fan. At least until I can
find a better cabinet style.

I have a homemade cabinet job that I bought from eBay. Annoyed my husband, as he said he could build one better and cheaper, but it works fine for me. I just use my LG for a hatcher. I wasn't getting good hatch rates at all last year from shipped eggs, although I was doing OK on my own. This year, I'm going to try to dry hatch. I can start collecting the BLRW eggs next week, and I'll be putting up another pen for the SLWs this week, so they won't be far behind.

Thought I would upload more photos of the blue crew. They havn't layed anymore eggs in two weeks now

. But since the days will start getting longer I think they may start again soon.

Her red is too brassy, but man I wish my hatchery wyandotte had that kind of type! My SLW is far skinnier and has a single comb to boot. Your girl's lacing isn't terrible for hatchery stock either.

by brassy you mean not red enough, right?

I thought so too, and I have to admit I was hoping for better lacing and richer color when her feathers started coming in, but I was shocked when she started bulking up like that...she is even bulkier now than she was in those photos. Her sibling isn't quite as lovely form wise, but her red is much richer.

I had first ordered a pair of SLW, and was extremely disapointed when they turned out very slight in build like the ones you are discribing and lacing that barely resembled lacing...one with a single comb. Both turned out to be roosters too.

I took a chance on these two since I wanted them so bad...I only ordered two, just in case they turned out far worse than what I hoped for in my mind...for hatchery stock, I think they are quite nice! I guess thats the benifit of ordering a breed that is new to the hatchery...

I got a new camera for Christmas and have been having fun taking new pictures of my young Blues.

It's strange that I never seem to get pictures of my Black pullets.

I have some pretty pictures of my one and only SLW, Dott. The wyandottes (LF) are very tough to find in my area. There are quite a few white bantam wyandottes though.

Anyone think she looks old enough to lay yet? She has been checking out the nest boxes since yesterday, and she is around 5 - 6 months old.

Yeah. Instead of the "mahogany red" that the base color is supposed to be, it's more of a very yellow-gold, very reminiscent of polished brass. I had thought about ordering BLRW when we placed our order with MPC for our first chickens because my husband really loves this color. But I knew that hatchery wyandottes often have poor lacing and I felt like I would be so disappointed if we did. At least with the SLW I had no expectations of her being anywhere near show/breeder quality and I was already used to seeing hatchery quality SLW.

This is my girl last winter.

And this is her last Friday, she looks really pathetic because she's going into the scruffy phase of her molt.

She's pretty ugly by the SOP standards. But she's one of my best layers of large round brown eggs (she was the last one to go into molt and I actually suspect she still laid during the very beginning of her molt). I'm really interested in what kind of chicks she'd throw with my ameraucana rooster.
