It's that time of the year.

We got our first egg from our SL hen(we hatched ourselves) on Christmas day...great gift!

I just got these bantams this summer.

I snapped the pics a few days ago. There is one in there that is a serama/ wyandotte, when I look at him I see a small roasted chicken. LOL Funny I have other mixes and dont see that. He just is a real roundy.

Back over Labor day weekend, I went to a dog show in KY, and while I was there I drove over to Foleys to pick up a trio of Partridge Wyandottes, and an older hen. Well a few weeks ago all the pullets started laying, but the roo, has no idea he is a boy. He is our only roo.

Well this morning, Robert went down to the barn to open the doors and Roo roo, went over to get a drink, through his head back and made a gurggleing sounds. It was his First attempt and crowing. SO all day today, he has been through his head back and makeing some sort of sound. He isnt actually crowing yet, but he is getting closer.

We have now seen him grabbing the hens, so it looks like we will be able to incubate some eggs in the near future.

I hatched my first BLR chicks just before the New Year. All 8 that were fertile hatched, but I had set 19--so I'm unhappy about the poor fertility rate. I had two cockerels in with the pullets at the time (8 pullets). This is my first year with this breed. They are so pretty! But so far, they have been laying poorly. I hope that picks up soon. The cockerels and 2 pullets are a little over 10 months old now, the other pullets, from a different breeder, are about 9 months old. I kept 2 pullets from the older group and 5 from the younger group. I haven't seen an egg from the older pullets since I separated them with their own cockerel on 12/17. They are from a different bloodline so I wanted to keep track of that. The other 5, I get one, at most 2, eggs a day. My second set of eggs is due to hatch 1/6 and I have already discarded 5 infertile out of 8. Anybody have ideas what is going on with the fertility? Up until 12/17, I had both groups together, 8 pullets and 2 cockerels. In contrast, my black copper Marans, about the same age, went through a laying spree this fall up until mid-Dec. And now they've quit altogether.

And another question for the BLRW breeders out there: can you tell from chick color which will be blue, black, or splash? I figure the blue and splash probably not, since some of the blues are so light. But are the darker brown chicks going to be black? Or no way to tell? I have 4 dark brown ones and 4 paler ones in my first hatch. Love my little New Year's chickies!

This time of year my Wyandottes are hardly laying. Out of the 6 adult hens I am lucky to get an egg every other day

If it is really cold your roosters may not be as active of breeders.

Guessing the color on your chicks when first starting out can be hard until you hatch enough chicks to get a sense of what your birds are producing. I have chicks that hatch out yellow like a splash but feather in blue. I also am only getting blues from my BLRWs even though my rooster is splash. It is strange

Foley's told me that I must have the wheaten gene floating around in the gene pool. They have this showing up in their birds once in awhile also.

Also, you may have too many girls per boy if they are young. Try putting the boys with one or two at first and see if that doesn't help.
