I recently purchased my first 6 chickens and 3 ducks. The chickens are a variety of brown egg layers. All about 7 weeks old. The ducks are a buff duck, pekin duck, and one brown duck that looks like a mallard (which is unlikely, but possible I guess). I live on the prairie in Northern Montana. I have a house on a farm about 15 miles out of town, surrounded by fields. I decided to get chickens because I have a nice coop on the property and kinda just wanted to use it.
I joined BYC to get coop ideas and general knowledge on chicken raising.
I really want some guinea fowl, but I am not sure where to get them, or if there is enough time to brood them before winter hits here.
I am worried about the chickens during the winter time. We have pretty harsh winters so I am going to do as much research as possible before the snow hits the ground.
Anyway. Thats me.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Chickens generally can handle cold much better than heat. The Chanticleer breed originated in Canada, to handle tough winter conditions. That may be a good breed for you. You can also post on your state thread and see what other BYCERS recommend for coops and breeds that are cold hardy.

How do I find my state thread?

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!

It is very lucky that you have a coop already and do not have to build one!
