There always has to be that one hen!

I have about 30 nesting boxes and one hen has always lid her egg in a chair on the porch...

I am going to try to move the boxes down low. Hope that helps. As for spce, they have always done fine up till about one month ago.

Now one last thought. We had some Red Broilers, two of the six were roosters and they were crowing. They have since been butchered. Would the crowing set off laying?

I know this is somewhat off subject where I started, but that hen trying so desperately to lay eggs elsewhere made me wonder about this all, thanks all for being patient.

I have one hen that is never satisfied, and always thinks "the grass is greener". We had her in our big run with her sisters, but she kept flying out. We moved her to a cage by herself, she paced like, well, like a caged animal. We moved her in with the new babies, in a bigger covered run, and she paces still. She knows where the door is, and if you even open it an inch, she's off and running!!! I don't get it, she's the only one. We did find that she prefers to lay in the tall grass (imagine hubbies surprise while mowing lawn), but overall I think she just wants out. Our space is more than adequate, so I don't think it's that, over 15sq ft per hen, we have 4 nest boxes for the 9 girls, so that shouldn't be an issue. Who knows whats in the mind of chickens LOL. The trouble with lowering nest boxes is it can decrease the amount of usable floor space, if the boxes are so low that they can't comfortably walk under them.

It's possible she is trying to lay a clutch of eggs in her chosen nesting spot so she can set on and hatch them.

In my setup I'd find a container of some sort and just set it on the floor to see if she would use it -- a cardboard box or some sort of plastic bin is fine. I don't know whether you would have the space for that.

Maybe it will help if you get your son to redo the roosts so they are all at the same level? They only need 9" or 10" of roost each, and it might free up some floor space in there.
