I have a rooster that gets out and 1 day he ate on 5 normal size tomatoes. I was so mad! He didn't have a name but I call him "chicken n' dumplings" Luckily he only goes to one plant so the others are thriving.

BTW, I just planted some more tomato plants where my corn was to have tomatoes in Sept. It stays warm almost until October.

Good luck

Whats even worse is they dont EAT them, they just have a heck of a good time plucking them off the vine! lol

I caught my EE pickin all the baby green bean pods off, just chuckin em left an right, wasnt eatin em, just havin a good time pullin the little baby pods off and throwin em in the air. She only got a few before I told her hubby was gonna eat her for sure and chased her away with the fearsome monster yardstick. (Brightly colored yardstick is a GREAT chickherder by the way!)

Well, today the "fence" is going up. Last year, DH and I cleared about 30 feet of our woods...to push it back from the house some. We had left the smaller trees we cut...laying on the edge. These "logs" are about 5 inches in diameter, and 5 ft tall. Those are going to be the corner fence posts.
Last year, my mother gave us 2 HUGE rolls of screen. Now, when I say huge...I mean...one roll is about 5 ft tall....and so big around, I cant get my arms around it. So...we are "screening off" the garden! LOL I know....wierd....but whatever ya got on hand...works! LOL

Just kidding...

Be glad it was tomatoes and not strawberries, like mine got into...you'd see this beautiful red berry on the vine, and pick it, and turn it over and find it half pecked...and the pecked spot was chick beak shaped! RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

OMG! My heart was racing until I got to the tomato part. Not fair!

My garden is all encased in 3 x 3 PVC pipe cubes wrapped with chicken wire. Wouldn't work well for a big garden but it works great for me- and the chickens stay out! Fencing is definitely the way to go and keep the chicken/garden peace.
