The difference is that it's on a Dachshund. Maybe to get away from the stigma that comes with Merle.

You're exactly right. "Dapple" in Dachshunds is a specific expression of the merle gene in the line. He's a chocolate dapple because his base coat is dark and his spots are light. If he had a light base and dark spots, he'd be a merle. I don't think people could really tell them apart unless they were experts in doxie genes. Maple is supposed to be a red dapple, but I think she's a merle.

We won't be breeding them or showing them, so we really don't care. Wifey likes her pups with polka-dots. (We have a red merle aussie shepherd too)

Yeah. Might be a healthy dose of this too. I am partial to merles and red-coated breeds in general, and I just take the associated genetic defect risk as part of package.
