She's a red dapple. Her patter is very light.

You're exactly right. "Dapple" in Dachshunds is a specific expression of the merle gene in the line. He's a chocolate dapple because his base coat is dark and his spots are light. If he had a light base and dark spots, he'd be a merle. I don't think people could really tell them apart unless they were experts in doxie genes.
