Thank you all, for all your help. I saw the pics of the Chukars. I do not see any indication of red beak or legs on mine, though. I am now leaning toward a pheasant.
I did go out and got about a foot and a half from it. It would let me get no closer, but did not run-just walked under the pine trees. On closer inspection, part of the tail seems to be missing, so I have no idea how long it was. It is quite jagged on the end, and there seems to be a bare spot on its rump, as though feathers may have been removed. There is also a bare spot on its head. This poor thing!
It has been dreary all day today, so I'll try to get more bird pics tomorrow, and of the eggs.
