Hi!

Today is an especially hot, hot day in Northern CA. I have never had to deal with three-diget-temperatures and I don't know what to do. My flock is panting, staying in the shade and drinking LOTS of water. I already put ice cubes in their water (which melted in 2 mins) and dunked their combs and feet in water (which they hated). Any other suggestions or recipes I can make for them?

Thank you!

Anne

I am in Arizona I wet the ground and feed a cool treat of frozen fruit or veggies. Mine like to stand in a shallow dish of water. Some people put out frozen water bottles for them to sit next to. Good luck

I had a few of those days here in Virginia this year! I put fans in my coop...one to pull air out..one to push air in. I also keep a bunch of gallon jugs frozen and put them in the coops..some in front if the fans to. During the heat if the day I offered chilled melons , cucumbers and sqaush. I also have portable doggie playpens...i rotated them out into the shade.

This summer when our temps here reached 117 F., I was glad that I had put in the misting system at the far end of the run that is attached to my coop. They walk underneath where the water drips down and stay cooler. Also, make sure that they have plenty of clean drinking water during the day, and putting a big block of ice or such into it will help keep the water cooler for a bit longer. I also added a bit of water to the feed when I fed them to make sure they were hydrated well, not too much water in it though.

I'm thinking buy them sunglasses and leather jackets. :)

Mine take a dirt bath in damp dirt - clay or loam. Don't think sand would be as nice. Can't believe how white the leghorns are after this wallow. If there is a damp spot with soft dirt, they will dig this area up. Shade is good.

I used pans like brownie pans for them to wade in. They liked it.
