Thermometers

I agonised over the decision but I read a UK article that said in UK we don’t generally need add water. Once I tested my hydrometer I felt much More relaxed. Yes there’s so many ways it can still go wrong. I feel like a first time mum!

Oh, I think I will stop adding water now too, makes sense and life a lot easier, also I just read about chicks drowning in their eggs! :hitI am going to candle them this evening and see how they are developing.

How did the candling go? I found this guy and website last night and reading it all really helped me. I found my camp. I’m the ands on meddling emotionally attached camp https://hatching411.weebly.com/

This is the first post I read from the website I shared with you

To be clear I don’t think I’m doing dry humidity. But I am sticking around the 40% with no water. I’ve messed around with it especially when I saw it in low 30s added a drop, it shoots up. I take eggs out and dry it and then relax till next time. Haha they are definitely getting plenty turning.

This is my incubator and I officially am happy with it. I got a really good Thermometer, a laboratory one and it’s exactly 37.5 degrees. We’ve just Had a huge thunder storm and look at the room humidity! 69% inside it’s 43% so I think it’s doing a very good job. I’ve marked my eggs and they are getting properly rolled too! I think I just need to sit back and enjoy the ride but I’ll let you know how the candlling goes!
which thermometer did you get? I have 3 separate thermometers and they all have different temperature readings :barnie

From the blog: "Higher elevations actually need higher humidity not lower. If you are hatching in a higher elevation I recommend you search "high elevation or high altitude hatching" to learn the most you can about the differences and needs at hatching in that environment."
Goodness, I didn't know I needed to take elevation into account when hatching! The things you learn ToT Well, maybe it's a good thing that I have a hard time keeping my humidity lower than 40% because it sounds like dry incubation won't work for me while I'm still living in the mountains

Candling was good, but I had one quitter with a definte bloodline, that I took out. but the rest are all fertilized and developing well. One is very far behind, so I marked it, so that come hatch I know it might need a bit more time. Thanks for the links, I'd be in the somewhere in between camp..lol

I know right. I got a laboratory one, like the old fashioned ones, from Amazon and I tested it by putting it in ice water. If you google how to calibrate thermometers you’ll see the way to do it.

It certainly would never work in west coast Scotland either. Way too humid here. But my incubator said fill 1 channel, then 3 channels then all 5. 1 It wasn’t till I found the forum I discovered the humidity debate and I had to go with my gut. I started of saying I know I need to be around 60% humidity and no one corrected me but I still see that somewhere. But when I filled one channel it went up to 80%. I think that’s what I’ll do for the last wee while. Shoot for 75 to 80% apparently less is more day 1-18. Today we’re around 45% in the incubator.
