Thermostat Question.

Thank you very much. I'm being very vigilant and it's a long time until they hatch.

After all I have read here about you are wasting your time with a water heater thermostat I dug a used one out of my "saved just in case" box . bought a cheap lamp socket cut up an extension cord found a foam cooler in the shed and threw them together . It is holding between 99.6 and 100.4 the last 10 hours. Since my pullets are 10 days old and I am new to the area so I don't know anyone local with laying hens. Even though they are close the price Mt. healthy ask for hatching eggs is a little high for an experiment. it might be a while before I get eggs to try.

Roy, no kidding, a 4 watt bulb? Dude, that's just mega-cool, I've been wondering how small I could get away with, wattage-wise. I have one of those frozen steak styrofoam boxes, my MIL sent us some steaks for Xmas. As soon as I laid eyes on it, I thought, "Incubator!"

I've been looking at water heater 'stats, too. I'll also put in a small fan, I think it'll be fine. I'll test run it empty, of course, with a variety of thermometers in it, to check it. If it fluctuates 2 degrees, I doubt that will hurt anything.

I've seen several of the folks on here who've hatched eggs at home, successfully, for years, have 'bators they made with water heater 'stats.

I just need to see a diagram of how to wire everything!

use the single pole thermostat It only has two screws on it. the hot wire goes to the thermostat then to the gold screw on the light socket the neutral wire goes straight th the silver screw on the socket if you don't have a color coded cord. hot is the wide blade on the plug , and usually has lines molded in the covering

When i made the incubator twenty years ago I put the cooler in a room with fairly constant temps. put the light and thermometer in the box and punch holes till i got the temp I was after. If I was using a thermostat I would use a bigger bulb

Thanks, I'm ordering the thermostat in a day or two, actually, more than one, because I plan to build a larger 'bator next. Then I'll have two small 'bators to use as hatchers and use the big one for incubating, and I'll be able to have staggered hatches.

That'll make life easier when I'm getting eggs from different people, and arrival dates don't sync!
