These are NOT what he said they were... so what are they? *Update Pics!*

Ok here we go, got some pictures! No weights though I am guessing they are between 1 and 4 pounds. There are 2 "angoras" I'm betting are only 1 pound each.

There's about 15 of them, and they are very sweet, IMHO not meat rabbits at all. At this point I am considering them rescues and will be trying to place them in good homes.

The one in front here is the mama of the other ones and is full grown.

They might be Netherland Dwarfs, or Dwarf crosses. Dwarfs do come in broken; not every Dwarf has a big round head and tiny, tiny ears.

The fuzzy one looks like a Jersey Wooly, just not a show quality one (ears too long).

I'd say say they are all mixes, probably mini-lop/dwarf mixes. The fuzzy one could be something else too. The one with his feet up on the cage has a very lop-ish face, with that fat little nose. The first pic looks more dwarf like to me.

in the first pic, the ears on the broken looking at the camera screams netherland dwarf mix. in the last pic im seeing fuzzy lop (long heared holland) or kersey wooly mix (both ae tiny breeds)
if theres any rex in there its MINI rex...
ive seen some NZ x mini rex that are about 5-6lbs full grown...
id say a couple of them could be mabe mini rex x NZ, but others in the group are neither NZ or rex.

the rex coat is resessive as someone else pointed out, so unless both parents are rex mixes (carrying the rex coat) or 1 rex and 1 carrying, you wont get rex coated babies.

As someone who is sort of nearby Cari and considering giving a few of these rabbit a home I have a request. I would be interested in reading information about this topic before I venture into the "project". So would someone be willing and able to post a good source of information. Of course in the meantime I can do a search but If you have a reference it would save time. ????

Hi Mary,

Not sure of what exact info you are looking for, but here is a link that has a lot of info on Netherland Dwarfs;

Hope this helps!

I agree that these rabbits are most likely relatively random mixes, or perhaps are several generations down from the original Rex and NZW. They do show quite a bit of dwarf type characteristics.

The wooled rabbit looks like either a small French Angora or perhaps a large-ish Jersey Wooly. Either way, that rabbit needs to be in a home that understands the care of wool coats to prevent matting and suffering. :( It's not all THAT hard to do but you have to really be committed to it.

All that said, remember that good pet homes are thin on the ground, and that all rabbits are made of meat. Small rabbits just serve fewer people per meal, is all. Personally, I'd likely use these as meat and go looking for some nice husky meat buns to put in the cages.

Anyone considering rabbits in SoCal needs to know that summer is NOT a good time to have them outdoors unless you are well prepared to keep them cool.

Two Yahoogroups that are excellent sources of information:
Meatrabbits - a place where everyone is welcome but the use of rabbits as meat is the idea. They get a bit off topic time to time but it always comes back with great info. Over 3500 members and 150,000++ messages in the archives.

PetBunnyList - a place where everyone is welcome, but the focus is on the keeping of rabbits as pets.
