I incubate button quail all the time. I don't candle at all because they are too hard to tell in the begging. I stop turning them at about day 13 and at around day 16 to 18 they will hatch. I have had hatches that take as long at 19 days too. I only candle at this point after most have hatched to see if any of the remanding will hatch. You can tell if they are fertile because light wont pass through the egg. The infertile ones will have light through the whole egg.

Hi everyone,
A little update.
My first chick died shortly after I posted. It wouldn't eat or drink.
It was sad, but just a day or so ago I was about throw out the rest of that batch of eggs because it was day 23 and to my surprise they were pipping. I got a further 7 to hatch and had a couple of deaths.
Out of those 3 are pale yellow, 1 is a very light ash colour and 3 are wilds.
One wild had a little splayed leg, but seems to be doing alot better. I tied its legs closer together overnight and this morning cut the string off and popped it back in the brooder with its friends and its better. Its also alot smaller than the rest (a runt). Its egg was the smallest, but its a fighter.
And this morning I checked the next lot I set a couple of days later than the first and I can hear chirping and tell tale tick, tick, tick sounds comming out of most of them.
This weekend I have to finish the aviary renovations. I am putting up mouse proof wire over the wire already there at the bottom. I have two hens on eggs and the first ones eggs are due Tuesday or Wednesday.
so "BUSY WITH BUTTONS" and its soooooooooo much fun.
