These were supposed to be Black Australorps... are they?

This is what my black australorp chicks looked like. pretty sure you got bamboozled or the breeder grabbed the wrong eggs....

Thanks everyone, I had a feeling they definitely weren't. Needless to say I've sent the 'breeder' a very annoyed message as he told me he was meticulous with his eggs and they were definitely pure bred Australorps.
We have had issues with him from the start, we found out after purchasing that he had stored them in the fridge for a week And then out of the 36 eggs he sold us only 8 were fertile.... so needless to say we are extremely pissed off right now!

Lucky these little guys are so adorable, but we really wanted Australorps so looks like we'll have to try again with a different breeder. I will update this post with a photo once their feathers come in.

They are super cute chicks anyway!
Unfortunately we see a lot of stories like yours on BYC, there are unscrupulous people everywhere.

That or confused young staff. The chipmunk coloring can be many breeds can’t tell till older. Definitely not a BA. The coloring is just like @cluchingheck who showed you a BA chick. Unfortunately an error.

EEs, Welsummers, SS, Brown Leghorns, Cornish etc. have the chipmunk coloring etc. Maybe they are EEs because they are fairly common. See link for baby chick identifier.

Those are definitely not Australorps. You mentioned the breeder had Marans, but you are unsure of what variety. Do either of the chicks have lightly feathered feet? They'll just appear fuzzy at this age.

No none of them have feathered or fluffy feet or legs

Here are some closer photos of the three of them. Not sure if the black one is an Australorp either, it only has a small white patch under it's bum, the rest of it is completely black

Sorry you had this experience with this wretched 'breeder'. At least you do have a few tough survivors out of these eggs, and it will be interesting to see how the babies mature. post pictures as they grow!

Did the "breeder" keep all of their chickens separated by breed?

I believe these are mixed. The black one anyway. The others may prove to be purebred. Time will tell.
