I have used flat paper towels too, works great. With mine getting bigger will switch to pine shavings this week...

I had mine on puppy pee pads... and put down paper towels on top of the extra messy bits.... then changed the pads every day. I did this for 4 days, then switched to shavings. The chicks at TSC are on shavings from the beginning...
