New chicken owner* I just got 3 Barred Rock. All 1 year olds. I moved them in a week ago and have only gotten 5 eggs. The owner said they all lay 1 a day. I don't have a perch but they just jump up about a foot onto the wooden frame of part of the coop. Are they just stressed because of the move, new coop? They also kicked out all the pine chips out of the coop, so I took it out all together, should I have?

They are probably stressed because of the move, chickens stress easily, they will probably start laying again in a few days

Glad you joined us! I agree with the above poster, they are most likely still settling in to their new home and getting over the stress of being moved. Chickens hate change and sometimes small things can throw them off laying for awhile. Make sure they have nice comfortable nest boxes with some kind of bedding they like, like dry grass, or perhaps straw, if they don't like the chips.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

X3 You need to give them time to adjust to their new surroundings. Move slowly around them, don't chase or try to pick them up unless you have to. And go sit with them in the run everyday. Sit on the ground and bring some treats. Food is a wonderful bonding agent and will help relax them.

You also might put some fake eggs in the nest boxes to help train them where you want them to lay. This will help them to know it is safe to lay too, as chickens like to see eggs the boxes. If another hen has laid there, it is safe for her to lay as well.

Enjoy your new birds and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC!!! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

X4 they are just getting used to their new home. Be sure to interact with them daily and make them feel comfortable. X2 on making the nests appealing too.

Hope they lay soon!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X5, they are probably just stressed from the move. With the pine chips, do they ever go in the coop? you might want to put some sort of barrier at the door so they can't kick the chips out, if they go in the coop because of bad weather etc, it is going to be hard to clean without some sort of bedding.

Hello and Welcome! Good luck with your flock! Many good ideas given by everyone! Have you read through the Learning Center?
