I got the post office call this morning at 7:30 that our 4 chicks were in. 5 week old, 2 each, Easter Eggers and Barred Rocks. I Picked them up and they chirped all the way home. I partitioned the run extension I built, and will keep them there, in the garage, for a couple of weeks before I move them outside. I put cardboard and 3" on pine shavings under the pen. They were hungry. I took them out one by one. Put each of their beaks to the waterer while I touched it so the water would run over their beaks slightly. They weren't interested in that. Each one made a beeline for the food dish. I was there for 10 minutes and they never left the food dish.

I see that you have already started a thread here on New Members Introductions. That's fine. I'm sure that your chicks are having a ball

- congratulations !

Here they are. Went home at lunch to check on them. Wanted to also check and see if they were using the nipple waterer. They apparently are since the level had dropped 2", probably 3/4 of a cup. My daughter will be excited when she gets home.

Very nice looking group!

Can I ask why you choose to order 5 week olds and not one day old chicks?
Just curious.

From reading here, and other places, it seemed easier. It sounded like very young chicks, 1-2 wks, were time consuming. I looked around quite a bit. Locally I could get 1 week old, 20 week old, or one year old. When I searched hatcheries, I found 1 week old, 4 week old, and 20 weeks. These were called 4 week, but ended up being 5-6 weeks. Also from reading, since I've never done this, it sounds like my family would have an easier time bonding with them, since they are still young, as opposed to buying 20 week old pullets. So, that was my thought behind it, but it was only from reading, so I may be way off though.
