My original flock loves yogurt, or any other treat item. I have to be careful how I give it or anything else to them, as I have some athletic flock members who jump and peck or bump things in my hands if they think it's treat material.
The new flock is totally different. Both groups got scrambled eggs, leftover chili and organic, nonfat yogurt. The first group had to be lured to the side so that I would be able to set it down before they pounced. The second group gathered round, but periodically pecked at the yogurt while giving me the stinkeye.
It's normal for them to be skeptical of new goopy stuff! I didn't feed mine yogurt until they were at least 2 weeks old, and when I did, I made a "mash" with a little water and some of their feed. They loved it from the word go! Like with kids, making it more palatable seems to be the key.
If you see pasty butt, wash it off IMMEDIATELY. Don't think yogurt is going to do the trick. It will help prevent pasty butt, but if you're already seeing crusty vents, take some action! It will kill them.
Several of mine had pasty butt, and I monitored them closely - checked them several times a day for the first week, and immediately wiped it off with a washcloth with warm water. Be VERY careful not to pull at their down feathers on their butts...it can be really painful and lead to bleeding, which can lead to cannibalism. You can even soak their bums in warm water (not too hot of course!). But take action immediately so you don't lose chicks.
No problems now with pasty butts.. it was very mild and easy to clean when i did see it so it may not have been anything to begin with. Did notice one of my chicks clean her own hiney.. turned right around and picked off a little spot of dried poo...she is my favorite I think
They STILL don't like the yogurt though..tried all of the above and they arent fooled one bit. Now, a couple of times a week when I pick them up to move them I just hold a little dollop on a plastic spoon and dip the tips of their beaks in it and they will peck at it and hopfully get a swallow down. Im pretty sure they are pecking at it cause they are cheesed off.. not because they like it
