They Got My Chickens....in My House!!!!!!!!!!(more story on Page3)

This is one case where I completely agree that this is unacceptable. Do talk to the neighbors and let them know that the dogs invaded your HOME! Also get it on record with animal control.

Defensive options:
Consider getting a dog door that only opens to YOUR dog (there's a thing that goes on the dog's collar). Also, consider electric fencing. If the dogs can get in, so can raccoons. And you'll need something strong to keep out predators when your chicks go out to their coop/run. Hardware cloth is a great goodness. (1/2 inch.) 360degree protection - under, over, and all sides of the run and coop.

Good luck. Hope you never have such a horrific experience again.

That is unbelivable. I would be madder

than a hornet. WOW. I would call the police and animal control. And the dogs would not have gone home. My blood is boiling

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! My husband and I just spent the last hour sitting in our back yard, enjoying the humor that chickens are, and figuring out what to do next....The chicken wire is temporary, but it is all we have today to use...better than nothing! The neighbors told my husband they were heading down south to the grandparents for the day and they have taken their dirty rotten dogs with them! GOOD!!! My babies seem to be in good spirits, we let them rest in a quiet room for a few hours to de-stress and then gave them lots of treats! Man, has that neighbor appoligized MAJOR! Every other word coming out of his mouth is "I am SOOOOOO sorry...." He is going to fix his side of the fence, the right way....and we will now become fort knox!!!
THE BRAVE SURVIVORS!!!
Just some missing feathers but all in all doing ok now....We are keeping a close eye on them...

They don't look any the worse for their adventure. So glad they are doing well, bless their little chicken hearts.

Maybe you should talk to the neighbor about going in on some better fencing. If they are still that apologetic and they know their dogs screwed up, they may be all for it.

It sounds like those pups need some serious training and something to keep them from being bored that's in their own yard.

They need to be the responsible ones and secure their yard, so they don't have to worry about their animals getting out and doind more damage all over the neighborhood.

Just imagine if they had gotten hold of a child! They can obviously do what they need to do to get through a wooden fence, so what happens if they decide to use someone's kid as a chew toy.

BTW I'm glad your babies are alright. What a way to wake up in the morning.

so sorry about your babies! i hope they are okay! ny nieghbor's friend's stupid dog got into my chickens a few days ago. it killed two roosters

the stupid mutt DIDN'T HAVE A COLLAR ON and it WASN'T NUETERED and the guy just let it out to run around a strange nieghborhood were people have LIVESTOCK and that everyone here knows everyone elses animals and would take a dog that looked like a stray to the pound without even thinking about it! the guy had to pay a fine and pay for the vet bill (one rooster's neck was snapped, but the other was badly injured and died at the vet's) and buy us new chickens

. not that that would make up for it in any way! people should have more sense than that, right? who let's thier dogs run wild like that?!

Okay, folks, there is a HUGE difference between 6-month old puppies who literally chewed their way through a fence, and a neighbor who deliberately lets an adult dog roam regardless of laws or dangers the dogs may pose. At 6 months of age, the dogs are just barely ready for formal training, and there is every good chance that they can become well-trained. The fact that they escaped in an unexpected manner, and their owner was exrtemely apologetic, and already has plans to strengthen the fencing is very telling that THIS IS A GOOD NEIGHBOR. This post is NOT the place for threats of SSS, taking the dogs to a far away pound or similar. There are plenty of threads where that is appropriate advice, unfortunately.

Working with the neighbor to strengthen fencing between the yards, adding electric wiring to that fence, securing the dog door so that only your own pets can use it, THOSE are appropriate for this thread. If you know of good dog trainers in your area, recommend them to the neighbor.

OP, I am so sorry that you had to go through this, and I am very happy that you found all your chicks in fairly good shape.
